Hey all,

Planning the "Trip of a lifetime" to Canada for 2015. I've read a ton of reviews and visited tons of websites. Also planning on going to the Tri-Esox show this month in IL to talk to lodge owners. Working on information overload right now..

Not looking for a new world record (but wouldn't avoid it!) but rather lots of action for the kids and myself. Muskie and Northern are the target fish.

So, if you have any suggestions or experiences, I'd love to hear them. The trip will probably be end of June/early July and I'm looking to spend 2-3k per person. Prefer all inclusive, American plan kind of deals with available guides. Fly or Drive in OK.

Appreciate hearing any positive or negative experiences you may have had.

Thanks in advance...

Hi Randal, make sure you visit our booth at the Chicago Musky Show. We have many happy customers who return annually, and would be happy to answer any of your questions. Clients of mine will be working the show for me, mostly. I will try and spend some time there as well. However I will be at the All Canada Show at Pheasant Run across town drumming up business there as well.
Tight lines;

IMO, if you want scenic with many opportunities at fish LOTW is hard to beat. If you're more concerned with fish, lake st Clair isn't a bad option. It produces awesome numbers of fish, but doesn't have the picturesque views of a shield lake.

I would head to LOTW and stay with Frank at Bay Store Camp. Frank always knows were the fish are and can put you right on them. Its a trip i look forward to every year. It is a very special place.

We stayed at Nielsen's Fly-In Lodge last year on Rowan Lake and had a blast! My wife also caught her personal best (a 48 inch pig!) and I saw a couple of the biggest fish I've ever seen. Can't say enough good things about our trip. www.nielsensflyinlodge.com

I would check out the All Canada show as well. It is just hunting and fishing lodges all from Canada. Usually held same weekend as tri esox and not that far away...

I would also agree that Nielsen's is a tough one to beat. Also check out some of the american plan fly-in lodges on the English River System. They don't get much press with the muskie guys, but some stretches of that system have good numbers along with big fish. Plus the fishing for other species is really good. Oak Lake, Maynard Lake, plus others. To me, the deciding factor would be if I wanted to fish out of my own boat or a lodge boat. If a logde boat was acceptable, I'd do a fly-in, no doubt.

I appreciate the info guys! Keep it coming!

If you have a lodge, please include your web address so I can check it out..

Also, we are a strictly catch-and-release group for all species if it makes a diff...

Thanks,

Nielsen's is definitely on my to do list. I know of someone who goes there every year and catches 50's each year.

Not trying to add to the information overload, but if you haven't read, "Muskies on the Shield" you really should. Gives a great overview of what you can expect on different kinds of Canadian waters.

Randalb may I recommend Cliff Lake located just north of Vermilion bay ON. You said muskie is your quarry then Cliff is your destination. Cliff's muskie population is like other lakes northern fishery, abundant to say the least. Vey little fishing pressure, and plenty of forage and structure make fishing Cliff for muskies a joy. I've been fishing Cliffs waters for 30 years and have caught hundreds of fish. And the memories I've made with my dad are the best of my life. You and your sons will have a blast. Average size fish is around that 36-42'' mark with trophy potential fish available. If you decide to go to Cliff your options are Lost Bay Resort or Muskie Bay Camp they are both perfect for the fisherman and family alike (same owners) The staff is top notch and the price is really reasonable. They will do whatever it takes to put you on your first fish or your biggest. I believe they are going to be at the All Canada Show this weekend in Chi town that is the 9th - 12th of Jan. Check them out and ask lots of questions. If you have more for me feel free to fire away. www.lostbayresort.com

Go to lsc and go fishing with spencer berman for 3 days and a charter boat trolling for 3-4. If u have three people fishing u can split it up. U will catch multiple 50 inch fish in 7-8 days and could walk away with 35-50 fish easy. 2nd week of July. This is not a tranquil place, but u will catch more muskies on lsc with a great average length.

To each their own, but I would not consider LSC a trip of a lifetime in the sense the OP is asking. He is looking for American Plan and being wowed with accomodations (based on the amount he is looking to spend). LSC is probably the best current fishery for numbers of big fish, but it doesn't offer the other things it sounds the OP is looking for. I'll throw out a few other camps which may offer what you are looking for since you asked.
Witch Bay on LOTW
Crow Rock on LOTW
Maynard Lake Lodge on English River; fly-in
Nielsen's on Rowan (would be my top pick); fly-in
Delaney Lake Lodge on English River; fly-in
Fireside Lodge/ Little Vermilion System (more of a numbers fishery but nice AP acc)

Either fly into Rowan Lake, or boat to Sandy's Blackhawk Island. If I had the $ I'd go to Rowan Lake.

Lots of good places to go in Canada, that's for sure. Like others have suggested above, talk to the lodge owners at fishing shows (All Canada Show for sure, etc.) and you'll find good lodges to choose from and narrow down. One place I would not recommend going is AML on Eagle Lake for this reason: www.baytoday.ca/content/news/details.asp?c=56907

Hope this info helps!

We recently booked our 20th trip to Nielsen's on Rowan Lake. We've been going there since 1993 and love it! We go there to get away from the craziness and fish muskies on this spectacular body of water. Lot's of room to roam and explore and never see another boat all day. Very inexpensive Fly-In as the flight is less than a half hour in length. Compared to a lot of drive-up lodges, it's extremely reasonable. I've been bringing my son since he was 8 yrs old and it's his favorite place to fish. Don & Lynn Pursch do an outstanding job at Nielsen's and they do a great job catering to families and kids.

Lot's of great photos here to see what the fishing is like on Rowan Lake:

You'll have that trip of a lifetime!

Good luck!

Thanks for all the Input guys!!

Hit the tri-esox show, got lots of info and spoke to the lodge owners. All seemed to be great folks and their customer service seems top notch!

After careful consideration, I've narrowed it down to two choices: Andy Myers lodge and Nielsen's Fly-in. If it were just me and a more experienced buddy or two going, there would be a ton more thinking to do and places to think about. Unfortunately, I've got a mixed group, Myself, two ladies and four kids (11-16) most of which have no large fish experience apart from what limited local lake experience I've been able to put them on. These two seem to have the best amenities and location for my group type and size.

So, Even though you guys have been great to pass as much info as you have to a forum "Noob", I'd appreciate any further input you may have between the two places, Positive or negative.

Appreciate the assistance!
