Posts: 17 | Try the old "tap on the back of their rod trick" and see how good their hook set is... haha...it is the so funny to have it happen and see it happen....BN is sneaky in the boat and is good at it...haha.

Posts: 8842 | I'm reminded of a story of a rather large man, who on one of his first musky trips to Eagle, set the hook so hard on a fish that the momentum sent him backwards and off the other side of the boat into the lake. He lost the fish. Because he was so heavy, he was unable to climb back in the boat, and his boat partners were unable to help him back in the boat. They wound up having to drag him to shore, hanging onto the boat the entire time, and get him up on the rocks so he could step back into the boat.

Posts: 1360 Location: Lake "y" cause lake"x" got over fished | When one of my buddies sets the hook, I swear his feet leave the boat an inch or two... That tapping the back of the rod trick works too. I did it to a few people this year. One guy almost lost his Sh*t when he set the hook. I almost went in the drink I laughed so hard. But on the flip side, I almost went into the drink when I set my hook on a rod tap... Karma is a B**CH I guess Edited by FAT-SKI 1/7/2014 9:16 PM

Posts: 20263 Location: oswego, il | Here is something to try when contemplating such conundrums. Get out a musky setup, attach a 3-4oz weight have your buddy hold the weight and see if you can hookset it out of his/her hand. Take turns. Could be fun at parties. You can't hang on you lose. Make it a drinking game. just a note. Keep some drywall spackle handy, watch out for the lamps, tv, display cabinets and fish aquariums. Edited by ToddM 1/7/2014 9:13 PM

YES. That video gets me so amped up. Thank you for that fine piece or entertainment. Now I have to get some Bondy Baits and try to reenact!

Posts: 4080 Location: Elko - Lake Vermilion | Tonts is in the DOGhouse ! and bobby,...your hooksets seem to leave the fish behind. maybe a bit too masculine. I have practiced Joe Boucher's hookset,...... many times....He had a segment on the proper way to do it on one of his shows..

Posts: 8842 | For me it depends on whether I am paying attention or not. I can hammer the hooks home with the best of them if I am focused and ready. But if I'm daydreaming or haven't seen a fish all day? I couldn't pull a hookless bait from the mouth of a toothless musky. If your rod goes "whoosh!" and the drag slips, that's probably good enough. If you're straightening hooks, that's probably too much.

Posts: 717 Location: Grand Rapids, MI | I'm all over with mine. Depends on how focused I am. I was with my brother and a buddy on LSC, and they were both laughing so hard, joking that my foot was going to go through one the doors on my casting deck. We were having so much action that day that every 5 minutes, one of us had a hit. At one point, I flung a pike that was probably high 20's, from about 30' out up and hit the side of the boat. Then, there are other times where I want to shoot myself after losing a fish because I know I didn't budge the Dawg in its mouth.

Location: Eastern Ontario | I'm thinking the only hookset that matters is your own, and is dependant on the lures and tackle you are using. If your hooks are sharp it doesn't take much.

Posts: 299 | For not a very big guy Larry Dahlberg sets the hook like a Champ! He can set as hard as anyone in the game...otherwise my fishing partner Ed shakes my 620 like its a canoe. Hooksets are free and Ed certainly takes advantage of it! I've seen him slam hooks home on many fish and even thick cabbage. Classic hooksets!!!
