I have been wondering the same thing, since I wasn't there either. However, I have seen some of Mr. Dettloff's "Louie" seminars in the past and it merely his defense of his hero; "The Babe Ruth of Muskie Fishing", in his words.

Personally, I believe John lives vicariously thru Spray and carries it to the point of dressing up in Louie's Hall of Fame displayed clothes and participating in the Musky Festival Parade (ironically started in celebration of Cal Johnson's 1949 record) or in similar clothes and spending time each year on the Chip in an old wooden boat of the 40's-50's era.

I have no idea how he deals with the fact that one of his hero's out lied the other. My opinion is that he has obviously deluded himself to the point that he actually believes in those fish, despite mountains of evidence to the contrary, or he has just gotten himself and Hayward in so deep he can't get himself out.

I guess the key word I see getting thrown around is documented or verified. I would be interested to see a list of muskies throughout North America that have been verified at over 50 pounds. My twenty years experience in the quality control field tells me that to have a scale be verified or calibrated it needs to be done so on an annual basis by a method that is traceable back to the National Standards. Is that being done Larry? If it is not then any of the new records will be disputed down the road. I agree the current record is BS, and if we are going to go to the trouble of starting over then it needs to be done correctly.

Jeff78:

Clearly two different words; "documented" and "verified". Anything written about I guess could be considered "documented". However "verified" is another matter and gets officialdom involved to one extent or another.

If you read the rules to the Modern Day Muskellunge World Record Program, you will see that scale verification to national standards is paramount. It is what our program is based upon.

Boots:

You are correct on all your listings (my error on Allen's fish as it was 1975). Actually, if we go back to the sham years and count all other apparently legitimate fish from that time forward, there are 19 from Wisconsin waters over 50 pounds (some suspect). I used Allen's fish as a starting point for relatively modern fish. Using 1975 as a base-line, there are only four!

You had Grutt's fish (was 50 pounds 4.5 ounces), which was from a non-native stocked lake; Lemay's 50-0 in 1983 from a class C lake and of course Tom Gelb's beauty at 51-2 in 2006 in Vilas County.

If we include all inland Wisconsin documented (not necessarily verified) 50 pounders, excluding the known bogus fish, there have been a total of 21 (two of them Hybrids).

Since we start at 1905, that means that in 108 years there have been 21 over 50 pounds...about one every 5 years on an average, but the average since 1975 has been one every 9.5 years.

Thanks man. One other thing, did Dick Sleight ever catch any other 50 lbers? I know this is off topic, but that dude cracked some toads in the day. Too bad those old originals were kept. I like to study the 'look' and origins of some of those upper WI River and upper Chip/flam fish from back in the day. Parents used to have a place on a lake tied to the WI near Conover. It produced magnums, but wasn't stocked and the bell got rung one too many times in the 70's-80's.

But getting back to serious business, it was a Ballpark brand hotdog I was feeding that fish. And I was wearing a pair of Louie spray replica shorts(still itching from the wool). Figured Pike loved them, so why not. Sher-Make, all the way. From Trigs.

The great philosopher Homer once said:
"It takes two to lie Marge, one to lie and one to listen."

For years the public listened to the lie. Perhaps enough to where the liar began to believe it was true. The residual effect can be hilariously frustrating at times. I refer to those times as the winter when the season is closed.
