Got an old mount from the 80's that I'd like to have repainted. It's held up well - no fin damage or deterioration that I can see. But the detail in the original paint job leaves a bit to be desired. Any suggestions? I am guessing someone could just paint over the old paint without compromising the mount, but I don't know. Anybody had any experience with this sort of thing?

Yes, if the original paint and clear coat is sound then it's possible to paint over the original finish. However, it is best to use a water based paint and not a solvent based paint. The major issue in using a solvent based paint such as lacquer is a reaction with the original clear coat which may not handle the lacquer solvent being "hotter" than the clear. One way around some of this is to first brush on a barrier coat over the original paint with a wax free shellac or other "benign" coating such as a clear acrylic.
There are some variables here but a repaint over original finish on skin mounts are done often rather than stripping the original finish which may have its' own demons...lol!
