Posts: 300 | I've fished a ton of different stuff, but never a flaptail. I've seen a ton of them in the BST forum, as well as auctions, and they are always bought right away. I know they are a topwater, but not much more than that. Any information or videos you guys have would be greatly appreciated.

Posts: 20248 Location: oswego, il | I would like to see what different flaptails look like in the water. The one in the video must have a swivel but some don't, would be cool to see how differently they work.

Posts: 941 Location: Freedom, WI | The one in the video was retrieved to fast as far as I am concerned (I could be wrong on that). I would like to hear from the Flaptail masters on that as there are a number of them here.

Posts: 2308 Location: SE, WI. | Roger; If you are referring to the utube vid on prior post. The speed he uses, I feel is too slow. The blade just more or less spun and did not do what I feel a flaptail should do. I like an intermitant flip of the tail out of the water. If he retrieves that lure at a faster pace, I think he gets that blade to flip out of the water. Several well built flaptails today, and some have dual trailers are back heavy, + a larger blade causes back end weight, which leads to more of a spinning blade than a flippin blade. I also do not like the small diameter back end that lure had. That led to the spinning of the blade also. Of course, that does not mean it won't catch fish. Remember, if it moves, its Bait. The past 15 years, I have sort of speak, raised the tail to acheive a slower retrieve speed and presentation. Some up front weight allows the blade to flip out more, and in my opinion, makes the bait more productive, because the tail is up near the surface doing its thing, where I think it should be. Sometimes you can just lower the front wire, to raise the back end and get the right sound and action. The bracket placement is huge when building this bait. Steve is right when he says retrieve slow, BUT, the bait needs to be built that way, otherwise the blade just spins. Sometimes a faster speed is needed to make bait effective. When I water test my flaptails, The lighter blade goes on first. If I feel a heavier blade is needed, then I'll swap it out for a thicker blade. Usually the lighter blade gets the nod!!! A heavier blade just means, a quicker lure speed is needed...and sometimes, faster gets fish to eat!!! JD

Posts: 32926 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | If the blade doesn't break out on at the least ever couple spins, and reverse direction running slow, I tune the bait. That also allows for the lure to be used in rougher water. Some of the largest muskies I have caught over the years were in really rough water. I applied the first 'stinger' on a flaptail back a very long time ago; without it, the bait had a disappointing hook-up ratio. That rear stinger hook needs to be smaller than most folks think; it's designed to hold the fish for a re-hook if she manages to get the main hooks free, and to ease her in if the main hooks remain out of her face. If your flaptail bait doesn't have a stinger, put one in there. In several threads over the years that process is described in detail. I, like Jim, like my flaptails to look more like a Snodlow build than the Vamp. Darrel Weihert built some that were killer, but only about 30 total. Russ Smith builds a good one. If it can't be tuned, as Dave Snoddy used to say, it will make a great fire starter. The L bracket like the one on the Vamp pictured allows for some serious tuning, and I always use a solid wire lead if possible, attached to the lure replacing the screw in eye...double ability to tune. I like brass better than a steel nail to hold the blade, my results have been better with a brass nail. The best I ever had was made with a piece of .030 wire with the end bent over and a plastic bead melted to the end, then threaded through the hole in the L bracket and the blade attached with a spiral wrap. The muskies loved that thing; the body I carved by hand. I sill have it here somewhere...the thing is 30 years old, I think. That's the lure Jim Bagely named 'Dog Turd' when fishing with me on Pelican way back when alot of our regulars here were not yet a gleam in good old Dad's eyes. Geez I am getting old. Posts: 2308 Location: SE, WI. | Those are some vintage posts back in 09. I love beavers pearly neon colors!!! I tried to find those posts for the fly dude. We may have to post on those to bring them back...oh ya, there back!!! My faulty surface baits will NOT start my next fire , always modifiable..Very possible, a jerk bait will start my next fire! :) JD
