I have been using a St Croix Premier PM86XHF to primarily throw 10s for xx years and I think it has worked well. I like the XH rod as it doesn't bend much therefore it doesn't put a lot of lateral pressure on my rod hand during the figure 8 so I don't get so sore.

I got some Christmas money and I am questioning if I should get/upgrade to a legend, which one to get, and what will I gain by spending $400. I can not go any longer than 8'6" so I can still get it in my truck cap which is a requirement. The sling blade is a heavy action and the big dawg is a extra heavy action.

For those of you who have used both (the premier and the legends) which legend would you recommend and why? And what would I get/gain by spending $400 as is it worth it?

Thanks and have a good day.

I have both premiers and tournaments and I can't really tell much difference. but I did order 2 of the new 2 piece 9' XH priemiers. I havent had a chance to use them yet but they feel awesome and very sturdy and the design where it slips together fits very tight.

The legends have a lifetime warranty. I have broken a few over the years and st croix has been great to work with they have always replaced them with no question at all. I also like the xh rods and the big dawg is awesome for throwing all baits. I have also made the switch to a split grip handle with the legend and really like them. Basically I would lean towards the legend for the warranty and the split grip handle.

if you can swing another 6" then get a split-grip BIG NASTY. If not, then I feel a split-grip big dawg would be a close 2nd.

I myself have 4 Legend Tournament Rods (classic jerk, lip stick, big dawg, and big nasty) and I will be adding 2 more (jerk and 2nd big nasty) to my arsenal next season (though I might hold out for what I suspect to be a new St.Croix Legend [elite or extreme] line to be announced this year at icast 2014).
With that said I love the St. Croix Legend Tournament Series. You get the lifetime warranty, good looks, lighter and more sensitive graphite, NSI resin, and last and not yet mentioned the extended trigger grip handle (Handle 5, 6 and 9 St. Croix's website) on most of their heavy/extra heavy models. That extended trigger grip handle adds comfort and support for those (like myself) who cup their reel on their retrieve for extended all day ergonomic comfort. This is one of my favorite features not offered by any other rod manufacturers (that I know of), which makes holding my Ambassadeur, Calcuttas, and Tranx reels more enjoyable.
I definitely agree with Ronix, I thought I wouldn't like Big Nasty (split grip) as much as I do, and thought the extra 6 inches would be too cumbersome, but after getting it and fishing with it I am now a firm believer.... I find ways to make it work (fitting in the truck) and I'll likely buy a second (my girlfriend likes it). Otherwise if you have an 8'6" XH premier I'd suggest you get the sling blade, it'd be great for blades and cranks and a bit different from what you already have.
Lastly, I will say that I just a Premier 8'0" Premier Glass musky rod and it's the newly re-vamped model where they changed the colors around a tiny bit, put a USA emblem on it, and also added the double hook which make for welcome touch-ups. They just added the two piece 9 foot models (mh, h, xh) which are worth considering...

Good luck!

The big dawg is really nice for throwing and fishing all your baits... But I have seen more than a few fish lost due to an unloaded big dawg during the fight, they're really stiff. The sling blade loads really nicely under the weight of most fish unlike the big dawg. That being said you have to figure out which is more important. Ideally a rod that stays stiff during the retrieve and loads all the way through the handle when a fish is hooked is the best of both worlds but we can't have our cake and eat it to I guess... Get the slingblade, losing fish sucks.
