Posts: 32935 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Not how it works here. One can offer actual facts about why they believe one is superior to the other, that will lead to far better information than someone offering anonymous, barely legible garbage bashing one or the other. That said, I have a 'Bird 998cSI, love it. Nice side imaging, nice down imaging, easy operation, great compatibility with Navionics, good price, no problems with the unit at all. I have a 596c on the bow, nice sonar. I don't think this unit is 'superior' to any comparable unit built by Lowrance, both companies build great products. Try both, pay particular attention to ease of operation, display characteristics, menu functionality, and what you want the unit to do for you, and make a decision based upon facts.

Posts: 1901 Location: MN | Are they compatible with Navionics still? I thought they were exclusively Lakemaster now.

Posts: 32935 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Plugged in my Navionics and it works great. Keith just initialized a new Navionics card, and all the 'Bird models were in the drop down menu. Perhaps the new Lakemaster cards are now only compatible with 'Bird?

Posts: 292 | best thing i can say is go to the store and spend some time using the diplay models to help check the operation of the units.its like comparing pepsi to coke, you gotta try them both and decide which one you will use and understand the most.both are great everything else is opinion. chris

Posts: 1638 Location: Minnesota | both make good units I wanted to link every thing together so I went with birds .the navionics card works in the birds but you do need the lake maps card to run the trolling motor.on the other hand I thought I heard that lowrance made a deal with motor guide to do the same thing as Johnson outdoors did. unless you get a good deal I would wait till spring to find out what there coming out with for next year

Posts: 279 | Humminbird seems very good about updating all their units. That said what do you want an update for on the hds gen 1. Is your unit doing something funny. Mine runs flawlessly with the 4.1....update.

Posts: 335 Location: Pulaski, WI | The cursor locks up in 3d mode. Sometimes needs a reboot. Disappointed that they didn't add any of the new gen2 features.

The gen 1 does not have a fast enough processor for gen 2 applications. I would suggest a soft reset first and then hard reset to correct your problem. A hard reset will erase all waypoints and trails , so back them up first. Also if you limit the amount of stored trails it may increase speed.
