Subject: Bass Pro Shops Muskie Angler Reels - Who?

Looks like they re-designed the Bass Pro Shops muskie fishing reels. With the same price tag, this reel looks like it was updated. Does anyone know who makes the new Bass Pro Shops Muskie Angler reels for BPS? Are they made by a specific company after a certain model, or are they made by an unknown - secret source? I am going to try them out. Will post how they perform and how they stand up to the abuse we put on them.

Have you given them a try? How about the rods?

Thanks!

Haven't seen the new ones. Previously they were made by Pflueger, or by the same outfit that made Pflueger

Used the old gold pete mainia one, bought it for $69 on sale, lasted 5 seasons no issues, decided to "upgrade", sold it to my brother and went through 3 brand new abus and an okuma that season, should have kept that #*^@ reel. Its still smooth as silk although some issues now with the thumbar engaging and disengaging, probably just needs a clean out though, hasnt even been oiled in about 7 seasons now. Great reel.

Ya, Pflueger's were great for the money.

The new ones look like an Okuma Akena to me.

Been using them the last 20 years. In the first 15 years only had one problem. Had a gear break and that was after about 5 years of extensive cowgirl use. 5 years ago sent all 4 back to BP for an overhaul and they sent me back 4 reconditioned ones at $44 a piece. Couldn't tell they were reconditioned, looked and felt like brand new ones. Last year added a toro winch to my arsenal but the Pete Mania's are still going strong.

My son hasn't been able to destroy one yet during his learning process (half pressing thumb bar, engaging the reel while lure is in mid flight, etc). He does like the toro winch better though.

Wow! I've never heard anyone ever say they were great reels. I know a couple of guys that have had them & they didn't last a season.

The website shows that it only has a max drag of 8 Lbs., which I think must be a typo. Seems they have redesigned that reel about 3 or 4 times in the past 5 or 6 years.

That was my question too. On the spec sheet for the new " black" reel it listed 10# of drag. Is that enough? I think a few if my shimano spirex 2500 size spinning reels beat that.

I want to say my Okuma Isis reels are listed as having 10 pounds of drag. I thought that seemed low but I've never had issues with it and don't even crank them down as tight as I can.

I realize hooksets can generate a little more force, but hook a scale up and see how much you can pull. I bet you have to try really hard to get 10 pounds, if you even can.

I thought the same thing on an Okuma Akeena I picked up at a swap. Only 10# drag. It's plenty even on big fish. They use a pretty decent carbon fiber drag washer.

The specs on the Bass Pro Muskie Angler reel are not the same as any of the Okumas. Needless to say, that does not mean Okuma doesn't make the reel. Anyone know for sure?

I dont think they are made by Okuma. Rather made by Bando, Banax or Ryobi. The schematics shows that the reels are made in China.

But this is a bit of a detective assignment. I tend to think Ryobi is the maker, because they used to do some of the Penn spinners.

Banax is another opportunity, they used to do some of Daiwas baitcasters
