Posts: 123 | Buying a top n tail 8ft split grip tonight. Gonna use it for mid sizes blades like double 8's and topwater. Any reel recommendations?

Posts: 2097 | Go with the shimano. No comparison between a shimano and abu IMO.

Posts: 865 | I have the both the reels recommended above....But I Prefer the Newer Diawa Lexa with 5/1 Ratio and a power handle on it. It has a smooth and Effortless retrieval even with the double 10's

Posts: 667 Location: Wisconsin | I have two Top N Tails with a Revo Toro on one and a DSV on the other. Like both reels very much. Both work great w/ dbl8s, and fine w/ 10s but you can feel the extra pull on the tens.

Location: sneaking out to get on the water ;-) | I like the revo toro hs on my top n tail as far as the 50 or 60 size it's personal preference. I prefer the 50s and they still hold plenty of 80# braid and backing.

Posts: 676 Location: Wisconsin | I have a Revo Toro 50HS on my Top n Tail and it works perfect, I can fit exactly 150 yards of 80# powerpro on with a coating of mono backing. I have a 300EJ as well, and I don't see any reason why that wouldn't work great too.

I use nothing but 400 sized Shimano reels for everything and I have no issues with casting distance and I always have plenty of power no matter what bait I use. I can burn bucktails or slow roll one. No need to have a different reel for every technique, just like there is no need for a different rod for every technique.

Posts: 865 | The truth is with all the Baits that are being made nowadays in so many different weights, sizes, and materials, there is just no way one rod and reel will do it all. IMO I'm thinking a minimum of three rods are closer to the truth. An XH or XXH rod for the giant lures, Suckers, and Pounders, A shorter rod for all the Jerkbaits and Gliders, and a longer rod for throwing med/lg Blades, Topwaters and twitch baits..... Oh and then there's trolling Rods, and line counter reels. Maybe years ago you had one or two stout heavy rods and two dozen reels................But that is SO not the case now................Mike

Posts: 267 Location: Ft. Wayne, Indiana | Well the setup that I used this year for everything from little bucktails all the way up to pounders did just fine. A 9' XH rod with a 400D. I have one rod that does most things great and some things okay. But no matter what bait I throw I have the same feel in my hands. Works very well for mme and not for others. To each their own

Posts: 246 Location: Grand Marais, MN | I think the zebco 33 will be the best match ![]() Any of the 300 size low profile reels will compliment that set up extremely nicely, my personal recommendation being the 300ej. should be an awesome set up, closed to no fatiguing as you can get casting musky lures.

Posts: 1638 Location: Minnesota | I am a Shimano guy all the way. I have 400 TE'S 400 D and the new Tranx HG and PG . This year I used my Tranx combo more then any other rods combined I used my 400 D the least .

Location: Northern Wisconsin | I have a 400D on my 8' MH premier and it feels great. For my dad who gets worn out quickly with heavier gear this combo allows him to fish all day.

Posts: 865 | Billy, how in Gods name do you fish your jerkbaits without slapping the water all day? Sideways pulls? I'm a Big fan of having my rod directly in front of me for great Hooksets.........But you are right to ach his own......

Posts: 123 | Thanks guys. I already own a bunch of Revo's and I love them for 8's, but I don't like them for 10's at all. I have a saltist 20hc I use for big blades. Effortless. I'm leaning towards the 300ej to try something new on the top n tail plus someone on here offered me a good deal on one. Sounds like it'll be a good setup.
