Well, it looks like my trolling motor finally crapped out on me after a good run of about 9 years of getting pounded pretty good. Looking at getting a new one over the winter.

It will either be a terrova or a Powerdrive V2. Question I have is, is the autopilot good enough to have, or is the I Pilot worth getting? I'm sure I can get by without the I Pilot, but I'm curious if it is worth the extra money? Thoughts..feedback....anyone want to buy it for me?

the extra money spread over 9 years will be miniscule IMO. Spot lock alone is worth it.

I'd pay double the price for it..

Perch fishing in 50 Fow on Lake Michigan, one push of a button, and your anchored..

I was very skeptical that I would need this for muskie fishing but after one season I can say that the spot lock alone is worth the money. It is pretty slick to be able to push one button in the wind and waves and be able to throw back to those followers without having to worry about boat control or cast to those small sunkin humps or points without constantly adjusting the motor speed and direction.

Spot lock was the biggest reason for me boating my biggest fish this year. I would get the I-Pilot.

Joel -

Absolutely get it. I guarantee you will not regret it.

Go with the Terrova too. Pretty much the best tool in/on my boat.

It is spendy, but definitely worth the extra dough.

Don't get the V2. Don't get me wrong it works great but when you are reeling and want to make an adjustment it is nice to still have a foot pedal instead of having to stop reeling.

I Pilot Terrova, you won't regret it.

Yep, agree that you should get it. I also agree to go the Terrova route. Having that foot pedal is very nice for reasons stated above and plus it gives you redundancy if your remote ever craps out. I had a V2 on the way but at the last second went with a Terrova. So glad I did. A couple of close friends have the V2 iPilot and wish they would've sprung for a Terrova.

After the first time out with the thing I couldn't imagine life without it. Spot-lock is wonderful. Recording tracks is great especially if you like to fish at night. The stuff I have saved is my night milk run.

Pricey yes, but well worth it. You should figure in some extra stuff beyond just the price of the motor. I dropped around $1500 just on the motor but upgraded the entire trolling motor set-up. Removable bracket, new wiring, new plugs, new batteries, stabilizer arm, etc. It came in just north of 2k but there are zero regrets.

Thanks for the insight fellas. Makes my decision easy. I figured if need a new quick removal plate and new batteries too (currently have the 55lb thrust PD based on bad marina advice) so I have to go up to the 24 volt.

Thanks again guys, you helped a TON!

If you can fit it into your budget go big. 80lb Terrova with the 60 inch shaft. 101 if you have the room for batteries and if the budget falls in line. I'm unfamiliar with what type of boat you are putting it on. There are other places to trim a few bucks off here and there but I feel that a trolling motor isn't one of them. You always wish you had more.

One other suggestion is that when you do the upgrade and have buddies you fish with or in your area...set yourself up so that if they have the same type of system that they can be swapped around. This summer a friend had his motor crap out on him a day before he was leaving for Canada. I set mine up specifically for this situation. He just grabbed mine off of my boat and away he went. Same mounting plate, same plug, same battery set up, etc. There are 4 of us that have the capability to do this and we have a "community" spare older Powerdrive as a backup as well.

Yep, was planning on the 80#. Was originally going to go with 70 on th PD, but the boat dealer said 55 would handle it. He was wrong for sure. So upping it to 80 this time.

Great idea on the other boats!

I'm also debating if i should get an ipilot but unfortunately I have a power drive v2 and won't be upgrading to a terrova anytime soon. So with that in mind, do people still think it's worth it to get an ipilot or does having to do everything by hand outweigh the benefits?

------------------- I just purchased a Power Drive V2, looks liked I'm stuck without a foot pedal, took it to ST Clair for 10 day's in Oct. and ran it without a recharge all that time and still had 3 bars at end of trip. Awesome product , just wish I had a foot pedal to go with it. Other then trading up looks like Ill just get in extra remote and live with it. Best trolling motor IV. ever had Spot Lock and Spot Lock Recall are worth the price. Back in the 60's fishing out off Sandy's on LOW'S I had green box, a map and a anchor, Now I have a GPS and Spot Lock. The World just gets smaller every day. Marv.

I just bought a used base model terrova 55(Version 1?) for my boat. Question 1: Can I upgrade to the I pilot system even though mine does not have US2 or auto pilot? Question 2: Do I need the first generation I pilot or will either work on my motor? Thanks!
