Just curious if anybody here knows much about how to make casting and/or trolling spoons. My questions are...
1. Does anybody know the material that most spoons are made out of? (Like Daredevils / Little Cleos, etc)?
2. If you wanted to do metal plating to give them some shine, what process is typically used? Electroplating? A vacuum process?
Just curious if anybody has insights into how these are done, or can get me pointed in the right direction.

| first you need dies built for punch press.
hi quality spoons are normally brass material. to take edges from stamping there tumbled. painting process is normally protected from manufacturer. for nickel plating you need racks for the process.
building/stamping spoons is normally not a basement endeavour. |

Location: Muskegon Michigan | I got my start in Salmon spoons working for Infinity Lures which went under about 16 years ago. Most spoons are stamped from Brass or steel. Steel tends to rust if not Plated. The biggest problem has always been making paint stay on plated surfaces. Dyed clear coats, transparent epoxy paints, Baking the finishes, and using etch primers like sherwin williams wash primer. Another problem is volume . You have to sell thousands of small spoons to make any money. I used to shoot 500 salmon spoons a day. We used Component systems three part epoxy (base, activator and thinner) very toxic stuff so I had to wear a respirator and use good draft veltilation.
My uncle owned Infinity and we had like 2.00 each onto the spoon to get them to market and only got 3.75 each retail. At the time that was the going price. Just no profit unless you can mass produce them and sell them all.
I have some 12 inch custom steel spoon Blanks which I prime with rust preventing primer after sanding. Then use my water based paint and envirotex top coats. They seem to hold up pretty well. I get about 35.00 each for them. here is picture of one of the big spoons next to an 8 inch Slasher. The hook is 14/0 Mustad 3551.

Location: Muskegon Michigan | I never shot any Video of them. Raymond Iverson has several and Lidio Azavedo of Blue water baits has one. I sold a few on Ebay. The action is classic daredevil wobble at about 2 mph. I always thought they would great about now(Late fall) for trolling behind a down rigger in the St. Lawrence or other big systems. Weight is around 8 ounces finished. The blanks are 7.4 raw. Hook size is 14/0 with huge split rings. 6 coats of etex. Its a big bait . Mike
