Posts: 79 | How does the stiffness of a trolling rod effect lure depth and how the lure moves? Does a softer rod run the lures shallower or deeper? Several years ago I was trolling with a stiffer rod and a softer rod. Both rods had the same lures. Same line length. We caught 7 fish including 3 over 50 in one afternoon all on the softer rod. Not one rip on the stiffer trolling rod. I know there is more wobble on the softer rod. What I do not know is how it affects the lure depth. Can anyone answer which rod runs a lure deeper, a softer or stiffer trolling rod?

The fish u caught on the softer rod may have had the magic bait. every bait is different. Density of the wood plays a big part in the action.

Posts: 315 | Todd is right about it probably being the actual bait...paint jobs can look the same but not every bait runs exactly the same in the water. Rods do not make a difference in the depth your bait runs, that depends on your line diameter. You can troll with any rod you want as long as you have your drag set correctly however, I like to use a rod that loads up really nice because then you don't get slack line when a fish head shakes. A stiff rod wants to bounce back to straight really fast where a lighter rod will stay loaded. As far as the bait that caught 7...do not let that one out of your sight!

Posts: 79 | I probably should've clarified. I had two different colors of the same bait. We switched baits. Switching baits didn't matter. The fish only hit the lure being trolled off the softer rod. Same line same diameter on both rods. Again, wouldn't a softer rod cause a bait to have more swing and in doing so rise the lure up a bit off the bottom?

Posts: 148 Location: pittsburgh, pa | The rods flex plays no part in depth of the lure. Thats line diameter. i prefer to run softer rods but sometimes i cant. if i need to run 7 or 8 rods off my boat with no boards then i need the long stiff rods for the spread so they dont bend as much.

Posts: 1247 Location: On the Niagara River in Buffalo, NY | Outside turn / inside turn, trolling straight or propwash side? I use St.Croix Premier Saltwater Ocean Standup Rods XHvy- Real Stiff-and I catch many muskies every year on 5 1/2" Wiley's to 14" Legend Plows.Sometimes all the fish come on the propwash side of the boat and just when your thinking that the next 10 muskies all come from the other side.Lures I use have been tested for depth and have been picked out for catching many and big muskies, the crankbaits that produced dinks or none were placed on ebay, not all lures catch fish!
