Posts: 171 Location: indiana | i was fishing on lake "x" of the woods last week and had my best friend with me for his first trip. had one of the most memorable and funny things happen. we were fishing a little bay in the pouring rain, so everything is kinda slick. casting a bucktail and a big fish shows behind it. i go into the figure eight and she almost eats, but then glides off. i grab a small twitch bait and about four casts later she comes back. into the figure eight she comes unglued and eats the bait. set the hook and a small run and then she comes completely out of the water. all of her body weight brings the line very tight and the rod gets jerked from my hands. all i can see is 400 dollars being pulled away. i go down to my belly on the gunnel and can only touch the rod with my fingertips. i react instantly and dive head first, rainsuit and all, into the lake. i get ahold of the rod and come up and my partner, steve, is already on the nose of the boat. i hand him the rod and he reels up and still has contact with the fish. i swim to the back of the boat, climb in and grab the net. steve then fights the fish and in the net she goes!! we both kinda collapsed in laughter about what just took place. she turned out to be the biggest of the trip at 47". even if it had been 37" it would still be a great memory for the two of us. the whole trip turned out awesome with twenty fish in the net. anyone have one to top that? lets hear them. Posts: 555 Location: Tennessee | Not musky, but a friend of mine was in a 10ft jon and hooked an 85lb flathead. While trying to land the fish he managed to flip the boat. He was able to swim to the bank, rod still in hand, and land the fish then went back for the boat.

Posts: 16 | On the night of the new moon about 3 in the morning on mille lacs a flying cormerant smashed right into my face. Hit me so hard it lit up my brain and I fell down in the boat! Didn't see it coming at all. No warning... POW! ... the bird fell to the water and was thrashing on the surface. I think it was its wing that struck me just below my nose. Luckily It wasn't it's beak in my eye... twenty seconds before that my friend had a good bite on a bucktail with fish on ...I burned in my lure and set my rod down to grab the net. ... fish got off within seconds and the bird hit me right after I picked my rod off the floor of the boat. !

Posts: 994 Location: Minnesota: where it's tough to be a sportsfan! | Great Memory...more to come I bet! These are the thoughts that get a guy through a winter! You absolutely did the right thing by going in after it! There are those that would argue and they may be right too. But always keep taking your shot at it. If faced with disaster, attack!! It's that big Mama that rips off the hooks right at your feet within inches of the bag that keeps waking ya up at night! If you are going to have bad memories those are the ones to have where there is nothing you can do about it.

Posts: 2686 Location: Hayward, WI | That's a pretty great story! Made me laugh reading it. It doesn't compare to your story but I threw my rod in the lake this weekend on accident. Was casting a Buckethead. Must weight 12 oz or so with weights added. Mid cast I was switching hands and got one of those backlashes that stops the spool for a split second, right at the instant I was doing the transfer and not really holding onto the rod. No chance to react, the rod shot out of my hands landing about 8 feet from me in 30 feet of water. I learned that a 9'XXH TI with 400 series Okuma floats very well, thankfully! Tucker

Posts: 1309 Location: WI | Keep your keys in a compartment or a pocket. I had a bait land on top of mine and when I chucked it in the water I reel it up with my keys hanging off the back hook! It's only funny because I didn't lose them!

| No mishaps to report. Sounds like you had another great trip. Would love to go back myself, and sounds like Cabin 1 remembered the Bondys. I don't know that the Bondy's were such a big deal, but it enabled me to keep fishing after I was fatigued. Nikki and I was at Belle River LSC last week and caught 28 muskies with 3 46's the largest. Another couple staying at our lodge caught a 51.5 and a 48 and a 47.5 Call me or I'll call you. Would like to hear more. | |||

Posts: 548 Location: MN | Four of us spent a few days on the Chip without even a follow. This was many years ago when I first started on Muskie. My brother in law and nephew saw a huge carp floating on the water and decide to get a picture like they caught it. As soon as the picture was taken the belly opened up and all the insides were all over my brother in law. Both of them have weak stomachs, still do.... lol I couldn't understand why my nephew was sitting outside the windshield of a closed bow boat as they returned to our campsite. Can still get them to wretch just talking about it.

Posts: 153 | I was fishing a clear SE WI lake late one fall with two friends. I was casting a Walleye Pounder bulldawg and in the process of talking and casting I forgot to depress the thumb bar on my reel and generated enough force to break the leader and off goes my bulldawg into the cold depths of the lake. We looked for the lure for some time but were unable to locate the bait. One week later I went back to the lake fishing with a neighbor with the intention of finding my bait. Since I had a good idea where and what water depth the bait had landed we started fishing that area. As we proceeded toward the area the sun popped out and the wind laid down as if a someone was looking out for us. Believe it or not while proceeding slowly with the trolling motor I looked down and said Holy %*$& I think I see my lure. About five minutes of dropping another bait to the bottm I hooked the lure and bam there was my Walleye pounder bulldawg. Edited by 2T Critter 7/18/2013 9:12 AM

Posts: 46 | Back in the mid 90"s we were trolling north of the boat launch on Kincaid. I locked up a 2 piece quickfish on the bottom and the line broke as I was trying to retrieve the bait. Fast forward 1 year, trolling a depth raider at the same spot and locked up on the bottom again, this time armed with a custom made lure retriever I get my raider, my quickfish with a years worth of snot on it and a new 10" jake. sometimes you need to be lucky, Rich Wren

Posts: 3926 | Running home with my girl around 4am, 500 yards from the house as I bring the boat to plane then slow down and aim for lights at shore. We always wear lifejackets on runs at night and I always aim for lights because they provide a narrow view of everything on the surface between me and shore. But my girl is wearing a headlamp and everytime she talks at me on the tiller I not only can't hear her but I'm running blind because of her headlamp right in my eyes. I wave her aside, she recalls the agreement regarding blinding me while we're on plane, and she looks away. That's when I see the ski jump about 30' directly in front of the 14' boat and we're doing about 25mph. A couple things run thru my mind in short order... 1) There's no way we're not going to hit it. 2) Last ski jump we had on this lake was 40 years ago! It was made of plywood. When the hell did they install another freaking ski jump, and why didn't I see it earlier on this 300 acre lake? 3) I cut the thottle while I yell "Hang on!" 4) I turn the slowing but still planed boat into a 90* turn just before impact. My best hope is that the semi-deep V curve will roll up the structure and then flip our boat, absorbing energy and we just get tossed in the drink with the boat dropping upside down on top of us. That's when it went cartoon. My boat hit not a ski jump but one of those huge blow-up rafts with a 15' slide on it. Instead os a "SMASH!" we went "BLOOOOMMMP!!" . Still amost rolled the boat over but all was well. Two objects on the lake that night, my boat and my neighbor's raft that had become untied and was drifting with the wind that night. And I hit it.

Posts: 1283 | Back in 96 we were up in Northern Wi on our yearly fishing trip. We always used the resorts boats and rented 15hp motors for them but this particular year my Dad borrowed a friends 25hp motor. My buddy and I got the 25hp and my brother and his buddy used a rented 15 that we all chipped in for. Once we got all set up and left the dock it was apparent my boat was much faster than my brothers with the 15. So hes racing around at WOT testing it out and we are just toying with him passing him ,doing circles around his boat and jumping his wake and having fun. As we hit his wake the last time I feel the tiller handle pull out of my hand hear a big gurgle then silence. I look back totally horrified and the motor is completely missing off the torn transom. Look back towards the dock and my Dad is staring right at us with the look of bloody murder on his face, look forward towards my brothers boat and they are just dying laughing at us. I mark the spot the motor fell off, my brother tows us back in and we jump in his boat with my dad and head back to the spot which was about 20ft deep. I ask my dad what to do and he tells me to jump in and get the F&^%in motor back. Now Im really scared because a few weeks earlier I got a tattoo on my back he didn't know about and always claimed he would kick me out of the house if I got one. So I'm like OK Dad Ill jump in but I need to tell you something first. He looks up at me still furious about the motor and I tell him I have a tattoo, he proceeds to tell me he doenst give a s^*t and to jump in. I do but cant find it since the water was so deep and murky. Now he is really really mad, and Im thinking now what. Ask him and he says I dont care what you do get it back. So I ended up hiring a diver the next day to see if could find it and he actually did. Tied a rope to it and we pulled it back up and into the boat. Got it to shore pumped out all the water, mud and crayfish that crawled into it and it fired right up. I was so relieved and so was my Dad. He was so happy he never even said another word about the tattoo. lol

Posts: 1000 | To break up the hours of casting I occasionally like to thrash the rod in the water on a figure 8 while yelling "Get the net!". Did that in October and my buddy freaked out, chucked his rod into the back of the boat, grabbed the net, tripped on his way to me, and when he got to me all he saw was a rod in the water with me laughing hysterically. Almost put me in the lake after that one...

Posts: 216 | tolle141 - 12/20/2013 12:26 AM I have a friend of mine that does this sort of thing too,it backfired one day after a whole day of fishing and not catching a thing he hooked one at the boat launch while we were packing up and my other buddy, the netman, didn't even flinch when he said he had one and was thrashing around back there. He just continued packing up while the other friend was yelling for the net. Then he saw the fish break the surface and it was a 50"plus monster but by the time he got the net ready it jumped and shook the hooks.crying wolf cost him a fish,And the guy still does this #*#* to us all the timeTo break up the hours of casting I occasionally like to thrash the rod in the water on a figure 8 while yelling "Get the net!". Almost put me in the lake after that one... This is so funny! I've always been a big fan of reaching over and bumping guys' rod butts. Whithout fail, they will set the hook. I got my payback on it last season when i did it at dusk and my buddy ripped his jackpot out of the lake and it almost took me out and stuck into my sweatshirt hood. As I was trying to get the hooks out, I turned to him and told him that he needed to be more patient with topwaters and wait to feel the tension, instead of just setting the hook. I won't share his response to that on this thread.

I always wanted to cast the big lures like dad and grandpa, but I didn't have the necessary skills with my Zebco 33 yet.

Posts: 8866 | I forget who it was, but someone posted a story here about why you should never take off a lure and put it on the butt seat. Had a day a few years back where I had a fish eat about 15 feet out, wasn't really paying attention. Instinctively set the hook, sending the lure flying right at my head. I ducked, put my arm over my face, and *WHAP jingle jngle*... both hooks of a double ten stuck in my forearm. I looked down and said "f---. That ain't good..." The funny part was what came next. Samantha had just reeled in her lure and was about to make a cast when this happened. I'm standing here just sort of looking at my arm, wondering how bad the process of removing the hooks is going to be, if there will be a hospital involved, etc. She looks over at me, sees the lure stuck to my arm, and says "Ahh, you're all right. I'll look at it later..." and proceeds to throw another cast. I said "what the F, honey? I'm standing here with a double ten stuck in my arm, and you're gonna keep casting?" What does she say but "Hey, we're moving fish. I'm not going to blow the spot!"

Posts: 8866 | I got lucky. It took me 39 years to find her, but I got lucky. Got her set up with rods and reels, took her out in the yard, taught her how to cast, and took her up to Eagle for a do or die week of hard core musky fishing. The first day was rough. Lots of 20 foot casts, swearing and yelling and carrying on about how stupid musky fishing is and how we're all a bunch of (names that can't be repeated here)... Then about 2:00 on the second day a 45"er came out of nowhere and smashed her Topraider, one of the coolest strikes I have ever seen. Water flying everywhere. Sounded like someone dropped a bowling ball in the water from about 50 feet. Today, she's pretty hard core about it. She can cast all day with the guys, and I'd put her up against anyone as far as being able to pick stuff apart. Puts way to much pressure on herself to catch fish, and gets pretty upset when she doesn't. But I can't complain! She'd rather be back at the cabin reading a book on really crappy days, but then sometimes I think she's the smart one.
