I was casting a large twin blade inline spinner when for some reason, just after releasing the bait, my bail clicked closed. there was the sound of grinding / breaking gears, and after that my reel handle now moves forward & BACKWARD. It is as if I have reverse on my reel now. The reel is an Abu 5500 series. CAN THIS BE FIXED??? I am hoping that it is the plastic gears which are located below the spool when the reel is disassembled, because they appear to be easily replacable, but I haven't had a chance to disassemble the reel yet to find out for sure.

It's most likely the pinion gear, which is brass. If you feel comfortable taking it apart you'll see pretty quickly what the problem is.

Send the reel back to ABU in Iowa and they will fix it or replace it, the reel is almost a total and will cast alot to fix on your own.

Sounds like the anti reverse is broke, easy fix. You should fix it your self it is not to hard to work on. Take the reel apart and lay the parts out just like the schematics print. The part that IMO has failed meshes with the square toothed gear (anti reverse ratchet) below the drag assembly. The part is probably under $5. If the reel has some seasons on it, maybe buy some other parts when you order the anti reverse pawl. Like a drag plates and a level wind pin.

The AR Bearing on any 5500 - 6600 ABU reel to replace it U have to buy a new Side Cover to replace a blown A/R Bearing, last I ordered one they were around $20.00 plus shipping and sales tax. I can replace the AR Bearing by pressing the old bearing out if I have the AR Bearing in Stock and I can do that for $10.00 installed, but that bearing is hard to find and ABU does not sell it by itself. AR pawls are $3-$4 but the newer reels from about 1995 and up have no backup pawl, they just have the AR Bearing, so U can add a AR Pawl by replacing the brake plate with the older plates that will take a Pawl, and the Brake Plates are appox $20.00 plus shipping and sales tax. The Main and Pinion Gears are $20.00 plus for the set plus shipping and sales tax.
So I would send it back to ABU and see what they can do for U.

I had this happen on a Record. Out of warranty... Sent it to ABU for repair, and a new one mysteriously appeared in the mail about a week later.

If Abu will replace the reel then that is the way to go. I don't believe the anti reverse bearing has failed, the reel would free spool when you set the hook or worked a bait with a snaping motion. Jimi said the reel handle spines backwards indicating that the anti reverse pawl has failed. Understanding how to fix your own reels is priceless.

Hey Pikemaster. Had something similar with my Tranx and a bulldawg. Didn't completely disengage the spool. She still runs fine, but doesn't have quite the buttery smoothness of before. Might do something about it this winter. Any idea what a repair like that would run?

Can't believe it still runs this well after that. Those things are freakin built.

Thanks

If the reel is less then a year old send it back to Shimano.
Or send me the reel this fall and I'll see what parts need to be replaced.

thanks for all the suggestions! I am waiting to hear back from Mat's reel repair. I am headed up to boulder jctn next week, and if he can fix it I could pick it up on the way. if it looks like it will be too expensive I will send it to abu & hope for a new reel... I will let you know what happens.

If anyone can fix it Mat will be able to, he does a Great job on reels.
If the AR Bearing is Bad he can press a new one in your side cover for you.
