I am torn between these two models;
CPCM86XHC 8'6" Extra Heavy Fast 20-60lb 3-7 oz
vs
CPCM86XXHC 8'6" ExtraExtra Heavy Fast 30-60lb 4-10oz
I prefer a rod that serves more then one purpose and I am not a fan of super huge lures so I am leaning towards the extra-heavy model. Thinking it could also be usefull for monster Pike or for saltwater jigging applications too!?
Would I be handicapped using extra-heavy instead of extra-extra-heavy when muskie fishing though?

Location: MPLS Metro | Every one of my rods are Shimano Compre Rods with the exception of my two 6'6" Jerk baits rods that are Shimano Convergence rods. My bucktail rods are Compre Heavy's and my rubber rods are Compre Extra Heavy and have never once thought I about getting something more stout than that (I dont throw pounders though). If you want an all around rod I would NOT go with the XXheavy, the extra heavy with throw all your baits with no issues. |

| I would explore other options. Honestily, there are more comporable rods out there that do not weigh nearly as much as the Compres. I used Compres for years and had minimal complaints, but the weight of the rods compared to others out there made fishing with them all day a hassle. |

| ive handled both, go with the XXH, not too much rod at all. Who cares what the rod weighs if you like them then use it |

| I've had lots of Shimano Compre Musky rods. They've all been replaced with Ti rods (at least the 2 primary rods I use). I put a post out here last year describing the whys behind that, but I can't find it...
I think the prior Compre line was better, but it stopped at 8' I believe. The newer ones are very tip heavy. |

| But is the tackle industries 9' two peice rod any good? Shimano's 2 pc system seems better designed, closer to St-croix style!? I'm shopping only for a 2 pc rod!? |

Location: Minneapolis, MN | If space was an issue I'd go with a TI telescopic before I went with a compre. My brother in-law has the 8'6" XXH and I've seen the top piece follow the cast a so many times now that it's just sad instead of funny. |

Not used the Ti 2 piece, but the 9' telescopic works great.
My only experience with the current Compre 2 piece was at Cabelas in MN on the way to my annual trip in 2012. They had 3, one was put together upside down... and all 3 were stuck together. The store rep couldn't even get them apart. I used their 7'6" XH one piece for that trip, and it was tip heavy and more like a MH than an XH. The first one I bought the reel seat wouldn't crank down, and the second one (which I used for the week) quickly developed an annoying creaking sound every time I jerked it. It was returned to Bass Pro when I got back home.
Had (and still have) several of the pre-2011 Compre models, and they work great. But, I have little confidence in their current line. |

| If you're not in a huge hurry to buy a rod and you like Shimano products you may want to wait to see the new redesigned models that will be coming out. I've seen the sample/prototype models and they are a huge improvement over the more recent series Compre's that were frankly an ill conceived product. They shut down production of that series less than one year in so most anything you'd be buying now is that old stuff that stores may be clearing out to make room for the new models. Alternately you may also want to check out the new St. Croix 2 piece Premiers that are also on schedule to come out for the 2014 model season. |
