| Being on the water this time of the year prior to sunrise...is awesome. I never got to do it much but the one time I remember the most had a lot of lunge action. The one that threw the weage had such a big mouth |

Location: Lake St. Clair | Have had luck at both times as well as mid day. For me gettin out early is awesome. Being the first boat out and getting that first fish of the day in the boat before most are out of bed is great! Evenings can be awesome too. Especially on the evenings that are calm in the mid summer and the fish are on fire. Bottom line is, anytime on the water is good! |

| I like fishing morning a lot during the summer cuz its not so hot out, I like to fish at sun set also if the weather is right...when fall rolls around I like to fish mid day though sun set! |

| Evening. A few lakes are better in the morning due to the 'boaters', but overall evenings are more productive for me.

| Me? What do i prefer? Well, i prefer to wake up leisurely and fish when I'm nice and rested with a lumberjack breakfast under my belt. Then take lots of breaks and maybe go in for a nap after lunch. No rush. Fish till dinner time, then retire early for a good nights sleep. But, since when does what we prefer matter to the fish?
The real question might be this: 'What period do the fish prefer?' because in reality that is when I want to be out there. While some can debate the 'whys'., my research into several large databases on musky catches show that we muskyheads are 2X as likely to catch fish in the p.m. vs. a.m. This holds true for fish over 50" as we'll. Those are the facts based on raw data from two large databases I analyzed. Interpret that data anyway you wish, but upon hearing this, I think most people who aren't 'experts' would say evenings!

"But, since when does what we prefer matter to the fish? " let me add in, tow drops by at least 1/3 when fishing with your lady...
If it's the fisherman's goal or the essence behind the question, "What time of the day is most productive?" The answer is easy, no one can say with any certainty, because know one knows what the weather conditions are at the time of launch.
I guess if I had to bet a dollar on catching a fish regardless of weather or water conditions, I'd say during the warmer times of the season the best chance to see a movement or activity period would be early in the day and another late in the day, however during the colder season, more towards the midday.
I know a lot more fisherman fish at dusk during the warmer times of the season than at dawn, that's only logical so the numbers are defiantly skqued to favor the evening bite, same goes for the moon numbers, just ask any resort owner what time of the month fills up first.
The real truth is, fish are slaves or reactionary to the local weather and water condition at the time and may get active at any point day or night. Only by being on the water and checking all depths and speeds can the fisherman say what had happened during that time.
Unfortunately most fisherman are totally unaware of fish movements during their time on the water because they spend there entire time/ season/ life fishing one depth, moving their lures at about the same speed. This statement may seem harsh but It's 100% factual. Only the fisherman who finally gets frustrated enough that he's not catching the amount of fish he'd like will some day or not, come to this realization and move deeper, jmo.
If we get out after work and see no fish activity, it could be because we fished where their were no fish, (depth) but if we know we did a good job of checking "all" depths and speeds we may be able to conclude that the fish were in fact inactive and non chasing. However again, if the fisherman goes for a limited amount of time and boats a few good fish, we can conclude that a movement did in fact occur while we were on the water. If the weather and water conditions remain stable we may be able to predict within an hour or so when an activity period for the following day "may" take place.
This was the sanario last week. A friend and I fished Wednesday and Thursday. Wednesday we arrived at the ramp at 2pm. Did a movement occur in the am.? We have no idea because we weren't there and had no reliable source. So we hit a few straggler fish through the afternoon but it was generally slow up until about 6:30 when a definite activity period took place. We caught several big bass to 22" and 18 pike (very few muskies in this lake) The fish moved no shallower than 20'-22', (good water color).
With this tidbit of knowledge plans were made to fish a different southern WI lake, one noted for larger fish the following day and just like clock work, straggler fish here and there but right at 6:30pm it happened again. Though it occurred in deeper water (25'-27') due to this lake being more clear they were up and moving hot and heavy, more than 20 pike landed and another 8-10 were missed in a very short time. We pictured only 2 fish because when you know that all fish school and fish activity periods only last for a short time, it's get them on, get em off and get your lure down in their face as quick as possible!
How long will the fish continue to get active in southern WI at 6:30pm, it could last for weeks, but probably not.
We as fishermen may have a preferred time to fish, making coffee, making breakfast, etc etc.... but if its our goal to put the "odds in our favor"... each and every time we are one the water we must be there, (depth) when the fish are active and that can happen at any time day or night.

Location: Dixon, IL | My good friend almost always fish on prime spots in early morning and I don't like to get up that early! I am not morning person and fish all day until dark. I like from 11 am to 4 pm during cold water fall and spring season. Morning and evening during the summer. I don't fish at night but I should try it during the summer. |
