First off Im not to the site so let me introduce myself
My name is Joe, I live in NY and I belong to MI ch22.
I have been targeting muskie for 2 years now.

I was wondering if anyone could stear me in the right direction as far as baits for tigers? Im wondering if anyone goes out to target tigers specifically do you throw the same baits you do for trues? I got a little feedback previous saying smaller and brighter baits tend to work better?
Any input would be aprreciated
thanks

Ronix,
I am from staten island. I fish for muskies in NJ. That is the closest muskie fishing to where I live. There are a handful of lakes that have tigers in them in NJ. Where is that lake located? I appreciate the reply. Guess i was looking for more of a general what kind of bait styles, and sizes seem to catch tigers, or is it just the same baits as fishing trues.
Thanks
Joe

Its in the finger lakes region of western/central ny. Ive had success for tigers with RO ninja tubes, 7.5" grandmas, 9" jerkbaits, and mini medussas.

I fish the same lake as ronix and I've caught them on almost anything. 6-8" lure work really well for my buddies and I, we have a ton of luck with daredevils but I seem to use them less and less as i feel it is more of a numbers lure there. I've caugh a ton on the Rapala Glidin Rap but have also got them on large spinnerbaits, large xraps, etc... I lost my biggest one ever last year in a "hurricane" on a 7.5" red October tube. I like to use mostly natural colors but have recently started using bright colors with just as much luck. In general, I use the same type of lures as I do for pures but tend to use smaller versions (even though I know there are some beasts in there)

I am going to start fishing greenwood lake in NY/NJ. Do you ever fish that lake?

I was fishing for tigers in the MN metro area last night and had two strikes at a DirtyB, one even left the water but both missed it.

There is a guy from Utah who used to contribute here who could tell you a whole lot about tiger muskies. A couple observations. Remember that the tiger is not the same fish as the true musky (which is not to put him down). The tiger is one-half northern pike. Approach accordingly. He will probably want cooler water than the true; and certainly in summer he'll probably be found deeper. He does like weeds. If I am targeting tiger muskies specifically, I will be throwing a smaller lure than if I'm after true muskies. I mean this even inch for inch. I would concentrate on 6" lures. The 6" Depthraider is one of them.

one thing I've learned is that they are a tough fish to figure out sometimes for sure. Generally speaking I've gotten most on 6-7" baits but other times I've seen/had them smash 9-10" jerkbaits, 10" swimbaits, and big topwaters.

I am a Utah tiger chaser, we only have tigers in the state but have lakes with some big fish.... Like many have said 5-8" baits are the size that get bit most.

On pineview the most productive lure, but most fished lure is the rapala j-13, this lure has prolly caught the most and biggest fish.

With 5-8" being most productive, the past 2 years i started throwing bigger baits, dawgs, super ds, r/o tubes and have found success. The tigers are tough but gettting a solid base of knowledge of the lakes you fish and time on the water will greatly increase your catching success.

Feel free to pm me I am glad to pass on what i have learned

Our local lake used to be stocked with Tigers in the 1980s and 90s. The biggest one anyone knows of was 49 inches and hit a 3-inch red-and-white Tadpolly with hand-painted yellow spots ringed in black. Point being, pick a bait to believe in and keep it wet. And don't be afraid to downsize a little.

I have had luck on larger baits, mag dawgs and bigger. I think most are caught on small baits because that is what people use. They are feeding on large trout, salmon, and suckers where I fish, so no need for smaller baits. Both Pike and Muskie love large baits, why would a hybrid want small? Don't be afraid to give the fish a bigger meal:-)
