Posts: 4 | Guys, I'm beginning to make my own bucktails (BT)and I was wondering if I could get some advise on how to best tie BT hair to coil spring. I have made a few but the thread end seems so bulky compared to the Buchertails. Also my hair does not seem that thick. The more hair I had the thicker the thread end becomes. Any tips or advise would be greatly appreciated.

Posts: 345 Location: Poynette WI. | what size thread are you using, this plays a part in how fast it builds up. also the quality of deertails is a big factor. Depending on where you go the deer tails will vary some. I like to pay a little extra and hand pick mine. I usually look for something with at least a minimum of 4" long I like 5"long hair. It takes time and practice I'll tell you that much. I usually do four hanks in a revolution around the coil. you dont need alot of thread to lock that in place, just a nice even layer, then trim back the layer and repeat. try using just less than a pencial thickness of hair if that makes sense and work your way around the coil a quarter at a time trim back the excess hair and repeat. if your going on thread thickness with A being the thinest and d being the thickest, try using a C gauge to start with, it will be harder to break for beginers, A size A is thinner but still plenty thick to hold up. Nice even wraps, take your time and try to position things as best as possible or as neat as possible. I also like to stick a wire in the vice and slide the coil down on the wire and use a close pin to keep it from spinning around when your not holding it. hope this helps, practice practice practice. let me know if you have questions.

This is one of the best instructions I've seen http://www.luremaking.com/howto/bucktails/bucktail1.htm

Posts: 4 | Thank you for the replies. I have used both the thin thread and the coarse thread. The thin thread was not near as bulky. I think my problem was that I was trying to wrap to tight causing the hair to flare out big time. Then the next bundle of bucktail would be difficult to add....I think wrapping the thread lightly on the first wrap would be key. I was purchasing my bucktails from either the Musky shop or Lure parts online. I was wondering how you connected the coil to the fly vice.....I endid up just using my regular vice which was a pain....I will try the wire idea next time...Awsome tips guys...Please keep them coming....Thank you again Edited by TGun 8/30/2013 2:00 PM

Posts: 110 | Another little trick I use is to use an electric beard trimmer to cut excess hair and shape the final wrap in a nice cone shape. Alot easier than scissors and you can cut alot closer to the wraps. I also use gell spun polyester (gsp) 200 thread. It's a bit pricey but it is thin and very strong (you have to cut it). I also use 062 wire with a closed loop at one end through the coil into the vice. If you butt the tag end of the loop against the tag end of the coil, it won't spin as you're wrapping. Hope these help!
