| I'm new, I just bought a decent amount of equipment and have been hitting the river pretty hard trying to catch my first muskie/tiger (supposedly there are both in the Potomac). After five trips I've seen one (in the shallows next to a small creek flowing into the river). I've been fishing fairly deep most of the time, and have used mostly crankbaits in an attempt to work structure (at least what I think is some kind of structure on my cheap sonar) in 10-15 feet of water. Right now the water temp is around 77 degrees. Can anyone give me any suggestions on whether or not I'm on the right track? I've also fished both day and night, and was wondering if they change position from deeper water to shallow overnight.
Also, if there are any people that fish the Potomac, I'd like some specific info on the main areas to concentrate on: so far I've put in at Shepherdstown and Williamsport and just would like to know which one is the better area. I'm off a kayak (which I can stand and cast on) so I tend to move fairly slow. |

Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | Can't really say anything specific about the Potomac. Don't stay focused on deep water, fish the skinny water too. Muskies like current, and current edges, think about them as a type of structure. Fish all of the visible structure, including docks. They also seem to turn on with high water, probably because of increased forage oportunities.
Don't think of 10-12' as deep, to a 3' fish that's only ~ 3 body lengths. Use some shallower stuff even noisy topwater's and twitch baits.
Have fun!
