Muskie Fishing -> General Discussion -> Spring; How much does size influence your choice?

Who here likes to focus their spring time on smaller bodies of water that tend to heat up faster? How much does size of the water affect your decision? Some lakes produce virtually no action in spring, is this because they are being fished wrong?

Small baits seem to work better on perch based lakes. If the lake has only larger bait fish, dont be afraid to pitch a 10" Jake or Slammer.

Hey Jason... don't read so fast. This question was in regard to LAKE size... not LURE size for fishing during the spring season.[:halo:] [:p]

The only time I consider lake size is when the water temps are between 55 and 59 degrees. I'll avoid those that are in that temp range because of the relationship to the spawning ritual... which often requires moving between large and small lakes for a short period of time in the early spring.

Lake size or should it be lake depths? A larger lake with shallower waters will warm up faster then a smaller deeper lake.

I believe shallow areas on the north side of any lake will warm up faster then through in a creek mouth and BINGO. [:sun:]

As a fairly new Muskie fisherman of 7 years (I fished for Bass for 30 years before that)I am convinced that GENERALLY SPEAKING it's best to downsize in the spring to 4-6" minnowbaits (similar to the small baitfish in your lake)and fish the areas that LM Bass spawn in your lake.

If you check around in the spring you will quite often find that the Bass guys catch (or hook) more Muskies by accident on similar sized minnowbaits than Muskie guys do on purpose. In addition, 4" plastic grubs are very hot at this time of the year.

Generally speaking fish small, shallow & slow in the spring. As the season progresses, increase the size of your bait to duplicate the present size (and color) of the baitfish in your lake. Generally speaking of course!![]

Muskiekid:
You make a good point about the size issue in the spring but remember one thing as well. There are a ton more bass fishermen than muskie fishermen so when someone hears of bass fisherman hooking muskie one must take into account the numbers of bass fishermen are usually much greater. Just food for thought. I hate it when you hear of a walleye fisherman using a jig and minnow landing a 50+" Muskie!!!![:knockout:]
