| Message Subject: Ideas for Qualifying for WMT & PMTT Championship | |||

| Since there was a little "internet chatter" last week on the minimum size limit of 30” for the PMTT event in Madison, thought to pose this question. I have fished events from both circuits in the past and always interested to hear ideas to improve participation in tourneys. First, I will assume the PMTT has this rule to increase the number of fish registered which increases the number of teams qualifying for the Championship. Is this a good idea? If not, what is an alternative for both PMTT and WMT to fill their Championship tournaments? Do you allow teams to qualify even without catching a fish in the qualifiers? If so what measures would you use? Maybe a random drawing for an invitation to fill the open spots in the Championship? Maybe a higher entry fee for a team that gets an invite, without a fish? Just thought starters....any ideas? | |||

Posts: 999 | I heard rumor that the WMT let teams that didnt even qualify for the championship fish the championship last year just to fill the field, maybe somebody who fished the WMT championship could chime in here. To me that's not right.

To me that's not right. Steve Genson and Mats Holland won the 2012 Championship on the Eagle River Chain last year for a $50k check. Mats Holland qualified for the event and since his original partner who he qualified with, Dan Altmann, couldn't fish, the open seat was offered to Steve Genson via Mats Holland. This was fair to the rules. There were rumors floating around that some of the teams were invited to fish even though they did not qualify for the event during the season, however, my understanding is those teams did at least pay into the pot by competing in at least one qualifying event during the season. I do not know the validity of statements concerning teams where both contestants in the boat had not fished a qualifying event leading up to the championship in the 2012 season, but rumors were swirling. Steve Genson's name is well-known in the musky community, but wasn't linked to the WMTS until the Championship. I don't know if Mats Holland had ever fished the WMT prior to 2012 or not, but I had never heard his name before last year. I think that was the case for a lot of folks who fish the tour. When two names, including one who's name is well known in the musky community, fished the championship and won, the rumors swirled that neither had ever fished a qualifying event leading up to the championship when in fact, Mats Holland had, and in fact, won the Autumn Classic: http://www.professionalmuskieanglercircuit.com/2012/results/namakagon.html

Posts: 89 | Dan qualified on Wapogasset with his girl friend then fished Namakagon with Matts and qualified again so they split up for the championship. I think it is wrong that if you don't qualify you still get to go to the championship, what if they win and they shouldn't even have been there. It is all about money If they want more people to fish the tournaments they should cut the championship down to 50 boats tops. That whey even if you catch a fish you still might to get to go so you will fish more tournaments to make sure you do.

Posts: 4080 Location: Elko - Lake Vermilion | Pmtt does it pretty good... You have to fish 2 Tourneys to qualify AND you have to catch a few fish to accumulate enough points to make the Top 35 Teams... It's a really good system...That works.... Jerome

Posts: 1220 | There are a few differences that it pays to take note of between the way the PMTT and WMT run their Championships. The PMTT charges roughly double per qualifying event ($600.00) and then only a hundred bucks to trail teams who qualify. The WMT charges roughly half ($330.00) per qualifier but then charges $390.00 for each team to fish in the Championship. It seems to me (just my opinion) that WMT uses this cash and the fact that they field a 125 team field in the championship (only 35 in the PMTT) to provide the substantial cash the winners receive. Last year's WMT winners got fifty grand for a day and half's effort. My guess is that when the WMT has less than 125 teams qualified, they go to the teams that have fished that year to fill out the field in order to gain the maximum purse. For me, it's a Godsend cuz that's the way I've gotten in about half the time. My feeling about this stuff in general is that those of us who fish this stuff know how the thing is run and decide by our participation whether we like it or not. As always, the best path is to allow those who fish the tournaments to enjoy the choice they have made and for those who don't like it for whatever reason to do something else. These are privately run events put on by individuals who own each particular circuit and can run them the way they please. I fish them both and have a great time.
