I just hooked and lost a fish I have been hunting for three years. This fish was thick and over 50 and a really big fish for an inland haliburton ontario lake. She lives on a steep rock bank that drops to 30' in a cast length. The water outside this area is 60-80' and the lake with good numbers of Cisco - this girl surely feeds on them.
Anyways, hooked her on a white hardhead. She ran 20' and I was just getting ready to set the hook again as I did not get her real good at the start and she came hAlfwY out of the water, shook her head and threw my bait ten feet.
I just threw my hat down in disgust and muttered to myself for 5 min. We've all been there before.
I am really wounded right now. Cant seem to shake it even though i am drinkin a mohito at a cottage. I guess i need real problems.
Just wanted to share my frustration.

I still remember the one that missed my Weagle. Thinking about that hurts more than when Ellen Mitchelle broke up with me in the 8th grade.

I feel your pain.

I still have flashbacks from a fish I saw in 1990 . Didnt even hook it . It followed . It looked like a Norfolk Southern train with several rail cars .

I am still haunted by it today. Went back and could not locate her.
Oh well. Thanks for the comments. I knew many here can relate.
I have been muskie fishing hardcore for about 7 yrs now. The first 4 were spent in the kawarthas where 50" fish at rare but numbers at great. I just cannot seem to break the 50" barkrier. I have gotten quite a few fat high 40"ers casting on st Clair. People I bring in my boat get 50+. That. Gives me great pleasure to help them and I never resent or feel jealousy when a friend has success - musky fishing is a team sport.
However, I just want to finally seal the deal as I have put in a fair amount of time, considering I am very busy with two active children.

At least you got to fish! we all have our "one that got away" that we wish didn't but that's part of the hunt! I'm still haunted by one super giant I lost a few falls ago that whooped me too. Getting to spend more time on water and seeing your kids smile helps move on though...

Landry, tough luck. To be honnest, I didnt know Haliburton lakes had fish in there that big. Im pretty sure I know the lake you fish, but I am going to have to give that lake a shot since my cottage is only 30mins north of there.

I think back and there are several 50+ fish out there that have my number... Im sure you will get "that ONE" soon.

It seems that the larger the fish, the harder they are to land. Keep after them and you might just find an even larger fish. Good luck.

Thanks for the support. Like I said earlier - it is something we can all relate to unfortunately.
Although I wish I had landed her, I am over it now.
It's just fishing after all.
But man it's fun - mostly.
And on a side note, my longest fish to date was caught at this same lake last summer, off our dock. I was just messing around with some lures and a 48"er came fom under the dock and crushed my mag dawg. My wife was mocking me about the ridiculously large lures and my kids were watching the lure as I turned into an 8. My son was a little hesitant to swim the next day!!
And that story sort of sums up muskie fishing. It is whacked. After all the 3am wake ups and 6 hour car drives to fish for 12 hours straight in blazing heat or snow, my longest fish comes like that. No wonder my wife thinks I am crazy!

You'll get her one day. Haliburton lakes aren't really known for their musky. Your lucky to be on one that does. My son was out on his own a few days a go trolling for walleye and hooked a nice lunge. Fish came up beside the boat and destroyed his leader and swam away. He's still peeed !

Your heart will be broken many more times by the big fish gods. You could take up stamp collecting and save yourself from any future pains.

Had one last year. Partner had just caught a nice 49" fish. Hit the Suick, jumped twice, shook it off on the second jump. Partner replied, "that was way bigger than mine". All I said was "yep". We went to the next spot. It's fishing.
