So the FICHT reared its ugly head. Its an 03 150 FICHT. Was running 5000 RPM across the lake when it started powering down, then sounded like it was starving for gas and died. Tried starting it, and after 10 tries or so it started up and ran for a few seconds and died.

Next Day backed it into the water and kept pumping the ball while the motor was running to keep it going. After 5 min of this it ran fine. Fished all day and drove around the lake just fine.

Last day driving around the lake at 5000 RPM it started powering down, so I gave my buddy the steering wheel and jumped back on the rear deck and started pumping the ball until it was running just fine again. Now it is in my garage.

Do you guys think it is the $70 fuel filter? Or the $720 fuel pump?

Not to put the fear in this but take it in and have it checked out. I watched a 2001 150 Ficht go up in flames earlier this year. The boat ran fine all the way across the lake and when they were pulling into their fishing spot the motor started sputterring and in this case wound up pumping gas into the lower housing of the motor while they were fishing. Well when it finally turned over to head back to the trailer it went up in flames. Hopefully yours is something simple but after seeing that I would take it in to get it looked at.
The good news of it was that everyone was alright and people were very nearby to help out. Again not to put fear in it but rather get it checked out.

Does the ball pump up and stay firm? If not, it could just be the check valve in the ball is bad. Try a new ball.

Have you changed/serviced the fuel filter?

Check the fuel filter if you haven't already . It should be changed every season .

Sounds like a fuel pump to me... My dad had one that did the same thing. Took grandpa out fishing for bluegills and heading across the lake and the engine started to flutter and eventually shut down. Eventually got it started up and limped it back to dock. Good news is the fuel pump on the engine is a super easy fix. If i remember right i changed it with a screw driver. Good luck...

My 2000 Johnson (carbureted) did the same thing when the fuel pump went out.

Best advice is to join E-Nation and & post your problems.
Great people over there who will give you diagnostic advice on any OMC product.
Good Luck

Check the gap on the plugs? My ficht burns them pretty good, regap by tapping down to 27-32 and all is well.

I had a 01 FICHT that had a similar issue. The fuel rail on the back of the motor cracked right at the test port and would leak fuel under load causing it to die. Turned out to be a 50 fix.
