| I'm going to draft a letter for Michigan musky nuts to send to legislators regarding the value of prohibitinng spearing of muskies. This would probably mean a spearing ban on lakes with muskies. My angle is going to be - lakes with big fish reputations draw tourist dollars to those communities. Can any of you guys/gals/Shady help me by offering your opinions on how a spearing ban is good, either for a local economy or for other reasons?
Thanks!! |

| Ranger,
I think the Minnesota DNR could help you out tremendously with this issue. I would imagine they can give you studies of what happened to the population of muskies in Cass Lake after they banned spearing 11 years ago. It was a 10 year ban, and after careful analysis of the lake when the 10 years were up, the ban became permanent. I have spoken with a guy from the Minnesota DNR on several occasions regarding another issue, but still dealing with Cass Lake. I will contact him and see if he is interested in helping you out with this outrageous issue.
As far as the local economy in Cass Lake, well then that's a totally messed up issue. Maybe the spearing ban REALLY pissed off the locals......that's why there's so much crime.......so maybe there are 2 sides to the coin with this issue. |

| Tahnks Jim. I hope they ban netting next at Cass - the piles of dead fish on the shore were such a total waste.
Other ideas, folks? |

| The only economic plus would be a good population of Muskies, so that needs to be qualified with future management issues. The true reason we want them to stop the spearing is the fact there is potential for Muskie fishing there, push that angle with the value of a potential developing fishery, and the fact spearing is tough on the overall Pike population because of the big fish targeted. |
