Subject: 400 TE Drag

I have a 400 TE that the drag will not loosen up after I loosen the star drag all the way. I took the real apart and the drag loosens up completely, but after putting the reel back together and tightening star drag it will not loosen again. Any suggestions on a quick fix? I do not have time to send it into Shimano before going to Canada. Would a now carbon drag kit cure this?

New drag washers may make it smoother but that doesn't sound like your issue. And the drag washers could maybe use a light greasing, but probably still not it. You're saying when you back off the star drag, the drag is still in full effect - meaning the line won't come off the spool easily, correct? When you took it apart, i.e. removed the spring washers under the star drag, then it reverses easily? Something is getting locked down and keeping the pressure on the roller clutch, which in turn is pressing down on the drag stack. I'd have to see it to know for sure what is happening. If you are anywhere near the twin cities I'd be happy to try to help you. I live just south of the cities.

U need to ck the drive shaft, one or more of the metal drag washers have dug into the drive shaft and will not slid on the drive shaft. Take the reel apart and file the drive shaft so the main gear and metal drag washers will slid up and down on the drive shaft freely. This winter get a new drive shaft, under $10.00 and replace it. also ck to make the metal drag washers square hole is still square if not replace it also.
Also the stock drag washers are not very good so after 1 year I will replace the stock drag washers with a Carbontex Drag Kit from Smooth Drags, now the drag washers will last a lifetime. Carbontex washers will give more stopping power and are always smooth letting out line, under $14.00 installed. This happens alot if lock down the drag and have a big snag or a boat side hook set on a Big fish, the metal drag washers will dig in to the drive shaft, back off the drag a little and use your thumb to lock down the spool. Lock down drags can and will do alot of damage to a reel.

I had Pikemaster install Carbontex drags on my 400TEs. They are amazing and a huge improvement from the stock drag parts. I like my drag tight. The problem with this in the past was the drag usually didnt budge when I had a fish on. Now I can tighten them down- the same as I always have- and they will give very smoothly when a fish makes a run. I highly recommend them.

Carbontex Drags are the only way to go, most guys will lock down the drag because the stock drags are so jerky, but with Carbontex drag washers when the drag lets out line it is always very very smooth at both low or high drag settings.

Do you use Carbontex washers dry or do you use any grease on them? Somewhere I got a little tube with cal's grease

I like to use a little grease on them, makes them waterproof and the startup is very smooth with a little grease, just rub a little into each washer.
