Posts: 208 | So i'm out fishing saturday, boat started right up, trolled the lake for about 4 hours and then battery would not start the boat (dead battery). This is the first time this has ever happened to me. Battery is only 2 years old, had it checked and is in great condition, just not charging they told me. Now i've been fishing small lakes lately which means lots of trolling and less running of the motor. I've never charged the starting battery with the exception of during the winter. Is this due to not running the motor and lots of trolling with the electronics draining power or am i overlooking something? A little peranoid now with a few big water trips in the future. Thanks!

Posts: 208 Location: Sun Prairie, WI | I charge my starting battery periodically just cause I spend most of my time on the trolling motor. Just a good idea to keep it charged. I know the charging system on my motor works but its not running enough to keep up with the electronics draw.

Posts: 410 Location: one foot over the line | I'm assuming that you have seperate TM batteries? and, what jjmuskie said.

Posts: 260 Location: Almost Heaven | Let's just say you have your starting and trolling battery hooked together, if you have 24 volt. That is not a good idea to do. Have your trolling batteries and starting battery separate. Also take your plus cable off when charging the starting battery. **Charging with the plus cable on can cause the rectifier to fry.** Need 2 batteries if you are running 24 volt and 1 cranking battery. I guess i'll just have to charge from time to time. In 20 years of fishing this has never happened but i do troll a lot more with the electric and run two sonar/gps units at the same time.

Posts: 899 | That's why I keep jumper cables in the boat. I assume you're not trolling with your main motor? Every once in a while while you're trolling start up the big motor and let it run for 5 minutes.

Posts: 5874 | What rectifier is going to fry? There is absolutely no reason to disconnect your batteries when charging them. I always have a bank of an onboard charger for my cranking battery. Charge it along with the TM batteries after every trip, no matter. Only time I ever had a cranking battery problem was when the charger for that battery failed. I also carry jumper cables that plug into the rear TM recpt. Easy to make, and store.
