I was curious what most guys are using for type of paints for painting up their lures. I know acrylics have some really vibrant qualities, but I'm a little leary about their durabiltiy(I wonder how well envirotex works with these paints?)
I realize that enamels are used because of durabiltiy, but are they fussier to use through an airbrush? Also if there's any other type of paints that are used please tell me.
I'm looking for ease of use through an airbrush, and solid durabillity. Also fairly quick drying times and easy to clean up.

So let's hear from the guys that sniff the fumes and create some pretty funky stuff,
Krappie

I just use a brush. You can buy acrylic paint (no lead) in very small jars called Testors at most hardware stores and they will hold up as long as the clear coat you use. I just use a clear coat nailpolish you can buy for a buck and it will last several outings. Then just coat it again. The fish don't care if your name isn't Van Gosh![:sun:] []

I use acrylic when painting bare wood lures. It dries fast, cleans up very easy, and comes out of an airbrush very well too. It is handy if there is other detail work that you can't do with an airbrush, to just dip a fine brush in the jar and add detail. As long as the paint is dry on the lure when the Envirotex goes on, it will turn out looking the same as it did before the Envirotex... but shinier and extremely durable.

i'll second what esoxsmd said. put a solid 2 part final coat on and your good to go. use acrylic, much easier.

I do not think the paint under envirotex makes a lot of difference. Just tried some waterbased createx auto airbrush paint and painted over some of it with a spray can and it worked fine with some envirotex over it looks good as long as the envirotex does not get chipped it should hold up.

I have been using laqcuer paints. Very easy to spray and dries very quickly. Go to www.taxidermy.com, they have lots of different shades of each color and it comes ready to spray, very simple to use.

Krappie,
I paint a lot of baits each year. Most of the time I use spray enamel directly out of the spray can (no air brush). I then finish the painted lure with a clear coat. In many cases it has been tougher than the factory finish.

With a little practice and taping/stencils, it's amazing how nice of a paint job you can do with a spray can.

Krappie I think with your ability of painting and your art back ground you should try finger paints!

I thought Testers paint was an enamel? I have been useing this on wood, and it is great, except for clean up. I just went to acrylic, and the clean up, water and a little amonia in it, is great. But I'm not happy with the gloss. Maybe I'm not doing somethig right. Good Luck

I paint a couple baits a year myself and it's lacquer all the way. Quick to dry, easy to spray and any color imaginable.
