Posts: 122 | WOJTUSIKS' WIN THREE LAKES PRO-MAC™ MUSKIE GUERDON™ The Professional Muskie Angler Circuit™ (Pro-MAC™) hosted the Muskie Guerdon Open Championship™ on the Three Lakes Chain this past Father's Day Weekend on June 15th and 16th. The Three Lakes Muskie Guerdon™ was the second qualifying event of a six tournament schedule for the 2013 Pro-MAC™ season and as if on cue, the volatile weather that has plagued this tournament season would play a very important role in the outcome of the event. Eleven muskies would be registered on a rain soaked, lightning intruded, Saturday and three muskies on a sun worshiper's Sunday. Although the Saturday's fishing started out slow, beginning at 7:24am a hot bite had tallied six muskies measuring over 34 inches in just an hour and nine minutes, but then the rains came effectively shutting down a very active frenzy, so much so, that in the following six and a half hours only five more muskies would be scored. At 7:24am, the father and son team of Joe and Prescott Mahner would tally the first fish of the day, a 35.75 incher. Shortly afterward, another father and son team of Tim and Tom Mathu would score on a dandy 43 1/4 “ muskie at 7:35am giving the duo the early lead. Four more muskies would be tallied before the rain deluge with Kent Stadler and Doug Bloch 36.75 incher at 7:50am, Neil Barnet and Bill Hill's 39.75” at 8:00am, Bob Parteka and Joel McClung 39.50 at 8:15am, with the final muskie of the surge coming from Jared Adamovich and Justin Reynolds at 8:33am scoring 39 inches. Even though the weathers turn for the worst would spell tough going for the competitors, the largest muskie of the day would come at this down time by Gene Erickson who was fishing alone, tallying a 44.50 lunker at 9:30am. Other teams to score on muskies were: Bruce Gruening Tim Pearson 38.25 at 10:05am, Kevin Black & Phil Graham 35.50 at 1:29pm, Sam Ubl & James Formolo 40.50 at 2:35pm and Tony & Kyle Warkoczewski 41 at 2:59pm. Saturday's precipitation gave way to Sunday's clear skies forcing the competitors to have a very short term memory of the previous day's patterns and formulate an entirely different game plan to battle the resident muskies. Sunday's dramatic weather change coupled with the shorten hours of competition and the negative attitudes of the muskies, only three muskies would be scored for the day from two teams. Mike and Dan Wojtusik would tally the first two muskies of the day with a hefty 43 ½ incher at 7:22am and another nice fish of 41 inches at 10:01am giving the team the only double for the contest and the trophy. The final muskie of the contest would be captured by Tim Rutzen and Ryan Bock at 10:36am with a 36 ¼ incher. The top ten finishers for the 2013 Pro-MAC™ Three Lakes Muskie Guerdon Open Championship™ were: 1st - Dan & Mike Wojtusik 2nd - Gene Erickson 3rd - Tim & Tom Mathu 4th - Tony & Kyle Warkoczewski 5th - Sam Ubl/James Formolo 6th - Neil Barnett/Bill Hill 7th - Bob Parteka/Joel McClung 8th - Jared Adamovich/Justin Reynolds 9th - Bruce Gruening/Tim Pearson 10th - Kent Stadler/Doug Bloch The next WMT Series™ qualifying tournament is the Pro-MAC™ Muskie Masters Open™ on The Lake Namakagon Chain in Clam Lake this June 22nd and 23rd. The tournament is open to the public to fish and still has open spots, but there is still time to send in your entries to get an earlier starting position. We will also be accepting entries the Friday before the tournaments on June 21st at Lakewoods Resort on the south shores of Lake Namakagon off HWY M from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. The Muskie Masters Open™ on the Namakagon Chain is a special tournament in that it is a prelude to muskie fishing's most prestigious tournament, the 2013 WMT Series™ Invitational Championship™ that will be held on the same waters at the end of September the 28th and 29th. The fifty of the Pro-MAC™ teams and top fifty of the Muskie Country™ teams will square off at the 2013 Championship to compete for a possible top prize of $80,000.00. This June's Pro-MAC™ qualifier is sure to be a great event affording the competitors with a lot of excitement and fun and will be a valuable introduction for the anglers who are new to the waters looking to do well in Septembers too. Although neither body of water muskie action was “on fire”, Bone Lake had that better weather and thus the better fishing results with two muskies over 34 inches registered, but Lake Wapogasset tournament coincided with an endless driving rain made for difficult fishing conditions and zero muskies over 34 inches. The Muskie Country™ Bone Lake tournament started off promising with the first muskie being registered just twenty minutes into the contest at 6:20am when the team of Courtney Sell and Jordan Klingbeil scored on the biggest muskie of the day with a 38.75 incher. The next muskie would come eight hours later at 2:20pm when Matt Eiden and Clint Zack tallied a 38.25 inch fish. The MCTC™ Bone Lake qualifying event's top two finishers were; 1st - Courtney Sell/Jordan Klingbeil 2nd - Matt Eiden/Clint Zack Sunday's tournament on Wapogasset Lake wouldn't be a battle between the competitors and the mighty muskie, but between the anglers and the elements in the form of heavy driving rains that made the fishing extremely difficult at best. No muskies over 34 inches would be landed by any of the competitors although a high number of muskies under thirty four inches would be captured and released. The winners and the second place finishers of the Muskie Country™ Wapogasset Lake qualifiers was then determined by a draw. The MCTC™ Wapogasset Lake qualifying event's top two finishers were; 1st - Jarod Leslie/John Korbel 2nd - Matt Eiden/Clint Zack The next WMT Series™ qualifying tournament is the Pro-MAC™ Muskie Masters Open™ on the Lake Namakagon Chain in Clam Lake this June 22nd and 23rd. The next Muskie Country™ double header weekend will be on the Pike/Round Lake Chain Saturday, June 29th and Sunday, June 30th on Squirrel Lake. There are still open spots for both events and a team looking to enter the tournament can do so by attending the Friday night registration, June the 28th at the Moose Jaw Resort on the west shoreline of Round Lake starting at 5:30pm to 7:30pm. Location: SE Wisconsin | This is a great tournament. I've been fishing this event for the last 7 years and while the boat numbers aren't what they were three years ago or more, it's still a decent turn out and always a lot of fun. Good people, some great sticks and definitely one of the coolest water bodies in Wisconsin to chase skis. There were 32 boats this year, but there would have been more if teams didn't turn around and drive home. More boats means more payout... Plain and simple. The rain was great to fish in. It kept us cool and made for a great bite. We stuck a 32" shorty first thing in the morning just after a 43/44" fish came unglued that we had pulled hooks from the day before pre-fishing. Throughout the day we had a couple more swing and misses before sliding the bag under a solid fish to put us in the running. The following day of sunshine hindered our pattern greatly and we were back to square one again, but that didn't keep us from competing. We had two short nippers half-heartedly try to eat our baits, but no cigar. The Wojtusiks came out of the gate swinging and hit a home run. Those brothers are truly a couple of the finest sticks I know, and it came as no surprise to me when I saw the results at the end of day 2. Good job, Dan and Mike, excellent stickery. Posts: 1220 | I'll agree this is a fun event every year for me too. I had a fish that almost measured but couldn't sell anybody on the last sixteenth of an inch I needed. I also agree with Sam that Saturday's cool rain was easier to fish than Sunday's high sky. Everytime the sun ducked behind one of the very few clouds, I thought a fish was going to come out of the shade. I've always found Three Lakes to be great musky water and will be there trying again when the next event rolls around this August as long as the water is not too hot! Congrats to the winners and to Gene for getting a second place all by his lonesome! Edited by Junkman 6/19/2013 3:35 PM | ||
