Posts: 150 Location: Appleton, WI | I am taking my first trip up to LOTW next week. I dont want to take all my lures but want to take a select few. Any help on color and type of lures to bring would be helpful.

Double 10's , 8's, even smaller stuff like the mepps marabou...we've caught fish over 45" the past few years on small stuff for sure in late June. It's a good to have guys mix it up in that regard Couple Cranks...like a crane bait. walleye, perch, crappie pattern. couple dive and rise baits in case you hit a cold front. maybe a few Dawgs.. that's really all you need for an early season trip

Posts: 581 | Bait selection early season on LOTW isn't too complicated. Bucktails: As Brian said, bring a variety for this time of year. 10's, 9's, 8's and singles. I like the buchertail 700 series for a smaller bait, and sometimes muskies seem to have a preference for blade size/style. My general rule is that I usually go with unpainted blades over black on sunny days (i.e., nic/blk or smoke/blk), and painted blades over black on cloudy days and in low-light conditions (org/blk or cht/black). I really don't think color matters too much, but its fun to experiment. Spinnerbaits: M/G's or Rad Dogs are what we usually are throwing. Again, generally, painted blades on overcast days and unpainted blades on sunny days. But don't be married to that rule. Good for working through and making contact with shallower weeds, without getting fouled. Dive/Rise Jerk: We've used a Wade's Wobbler with good success. Again, color doesn't seem to be important, but contrasting colors are what we try to use. Long hard sweeps with this bait followed by an accentuated pause will trigger neutral fish. Have had many days where front angler is getting multiple lazy follows on blades, while back angler with the Wade's has much less overall action, but they're all biters. Twitch Baits: I also like cranes. Good bait for the guy in the back of the boat to throw behind a bucktail. Again, color doesn't matter...we've done well with all the different patterns. Topwater: Topraider or slow-moving hogwobbler at dusk. And bring a WTD bait. Occasionally, we have days where fish seem to only want to eat a WTD-style topwater. Sucks though, since hooking % is only fair at best. That list is probably more than we'll typically throw in a week's time...we'll often go several days straight of front angler throwing nothing but a bucktail, back angler a Wade's, and then maybe a topraider/WTD combo at dusk.
