| I am looking at an Esox Mag. My last few boats had Terova or some kind of PD like it.
This will be my 1st cable TM.
The foot pad is SOOO tall. Will I get used to it?
What are the benefits of a cable vs a power drive? There has to be some, I see em out there. Turning speed could be one.......
Anyone here go from PD to cable intentionally?
Thanks,
Chris

Location: Eastern Ontario | I am in the same situation but think I will remove the Maxxum and try to sell and install an Ipilot. I think cable drive is improved since I last used one but I never liked doing the one legged dance. Cable is much quicker to respond and I think most newer ones are set in a well. The one I had years ago would flip around and torque steer when you take your foot off the pedal. electric steer is prefered by guys that want to steer the boat while trolling extra slow (walleye or trout) or steer a kicker that is not linked to the main motor.
Most Bass Pros seem to use cable drive

Location: Hopefully on the water | Personally I like the Maxxum's. I had a PD on my current boat and took it off to go back to the Maxxum. Will YOU get use to it. Depends on how long you want to stick with it. For me I only gave the PD about 2 outtings before making the switch.
I think it comes down to what you feel comfortable with and how you fish. I fish a lot of shallow water and occasionally get hung up on rocks or woods. I like being able to have the trolling motor partially in/out of the water to retreive baits when we are snagged. I also like the quick response of a cable.
One thing to adjust on them is the tension screw off the front of the foot pedal. You can tighten or losen them up a fair amount. I keep mine pretty snug so when I take my foot off the pedal it doesn't spin on me. Keeps it in the direction I had it pointed.
Yes the pedal is big on these but in the fall of the year is when I think they really shine and you have boots on. it is all preference on cable/PD and what you are comfortable with. Enjoy the boat. |
