Subject: Trolling Motor Question for the Guides..?

I know some of you use the cable controlled units like the Minn-Kota Maxim and others use units with control pads...

My question is why do you use what you do...?

For the past number of years I have been using the Power Drive series because I liked being able to run the motor from anywhere in the boat. I.e. I don't have to stand on the front deck with the client all day... I usually don't fish much or at all when I have 2 clients in the boat. I am more concerned with boat control and watching over their presentation skills, etc.

I just picked up a different boat this fall that came rigged with a new Maxim... Nice unit...I love the instant response of cable control and how easy they launch..it's also more quiet than any Power Drive I've ever had.

So my question is...for you guys that use these units...how do they work out for guiding..? Jason I know you have one...what did you do..?

I briefly mentioned in another post that I may consider selling my Maxim and I've already got 4 emails from perspective buyers...Please help me make up my mind..[]

Thanks again...

I perfer the maxim for boat control, its quicker to adjust the boat in the wind and make those suttle adjustments to keep you on fish.

I guided 7 years out of the back of a Tuffy Esox Magnum with a 42lb tiller trolling moter. I loved that, the clients were happy to get FIRST water. Then I got my Tuffy 1990 Esox Deep V and guided one year out of that out of the bow on a Minn-kota maxim. I was worried at first but I found that if you pitch out deep and quarter the boat to the weed line or shoreline, actually the clients got better water. Quartering allows the bait to be the zone longer then casting directly towards the shoreline. My boat control was a tad bit better on windy days and I could work structure much better by pulling the bow off the break when I saw I was getting to close to the weed edge.

Besides, most of the time you are up in the bow, picking the clients backlashes out and teaching them how to catch or work a bait. I found it easier for boat control in the bow and never lost the structure I was working while helping customers.

Just DONT take thier water.....and you will love it in the bow and will catch a few on the deep edge while you are at it.

Give the maxim A try, I think you will find that any inconveinence is outweighed by boat control especially in wind or current.

Curly, I would not even think about a different troller anymore. That Maxxum is the real deal. This is my second boat with one on the bow and I will not be caught with out one. First tourney that I won last year I went and bought a new Maxxum 74# thrust "spare" just in case. Have never had to use it but it is a reassuring feeling to have it along at those far away tourneys. My $.02

Well that takes care of that.....

For those who have emailed me the Maxxum stays on the
"S.S. Curly" to at least give it a fair try....

Jason what you said about quartering makes sense...I have quartered the boat for better control in wind and waves but didn't think of standing up there and pitching deep...

I do like the way it performs...I owe it to at least give it a try with clients... Maybe even give them a chance to try running it...give them a "hands on" lesson about boat control.

Ok...now I still gotta decide what to do with my X15... that'll be the tomorrows headache..I'm going to bed[::)]

Thanks guys...

Hey Dave....it must have taken you a half-hour to type a message that long...[] [] [;)]

I am one of those who prefers to use the power drive for the folowing reasons.

Firstly they are available with the autopilot and this year as a bonus a co pilot. Man that co pilot was invented for the guide in mind, no more wires in the boat and you can control your motor from anywhere in the boat or actulay even in another boat as long it is within 40'.
