Canada | Just wondering why it is common practice to squeeze the tail back to get a couple of inches or what ever it is vs. fanning the tail out which would seem to give a more acurite natural measurement ,not to take away from any body's fish? I realize it's to get those extra inches, have I answered myself or is there more to it? |

Location: Bemidji, Lake Vermilion | Its the way that the DNR or most other freshwater conservation departments will measure your fish. Its called "total length" and is essentially the most common measurement used for freshwater fish. There is also the "standard length" which only measures essentially to the end of the "meat" at the front of the tail or "fork length" which only measures to the fork in the tail of most freshwater fish. If you don't choose to pinch for an accurate measurement that's fine. Try it sometime in a MN lake with slots on walleyes, pike, muskie minimums etc and that fish you thought you could keep but didn't pinch the tail on could really cost you big chaching! |

In GB, a 45' with pinchted tail is about 64". BR |

It would give the 45" a couple of inches or so and seeing as its the norm and the DNR guys do it why not add it on I doubt the inch police will be at your door the very next day asking for proof ;- ). |

I'll have to pay attention next time I catch one and measure but I'd guess 45.25 or maybe 45.5. I don't think it makes a drastic difference. |

I hear its the same thing in the Hayward area. I've never fished there though so its hard for me to say for sure. |
