For opener this weekend I am sharing a boat and limiting myself to about a dozen lures and one rod/reel. My question is: what lures should I be bringing with? Never fished the Northern opener... 5 days!

Hiya,

Small inline spinners and 6" minnow baits would be my ticket to start the year.... With how cold I would be expecting the water to be, if you can weight the 6" minnow baits by putting on heavier hooks to get the lure to just sit there without rising too fast, all the better.

My go to spring lure is a 6" grandma with heavy 1/0 hooks on them. Usually get it to suspend quite well. Twitch-twitch, pause... Twitch twich, pause...

I agree with the above on the in-line spinners and 6" minnow lures. But I have a point to add on the hook size for your minnow lures. I like to use the 6" Jake as a crank bait as well as a twitch bait. To get the action out of 6" Jake that I want, I have had to down-size my treble hooks to 1 not 1/0. Of course you are dealing with a less muscular hook then, but I think you have to get the hit first. I take the risk on a straightened hook. Let me also suggest the 5.5" Wiley lure. It is a proven fish killer.
