MONTICELLO, Ind. -- A man's attempt to rig a fishing tournament last summer has now landed him a criminal record and a fine.

Danny R. Engleking, 40, of Brookston was arrested in August after police say he was caught by a surveillance camera loading bass from a sunken cage onto his boat during a fishing contest on Lake Shafer.

He pleaded guilty Tuesday to a misdemeanor charge of conversion in exchange for White County Prosecutor Bob Guy dropping a felony theft charge that was filed after Engleking claimed the contest's $300 first prize.

The plea agreement calls for Engleking to pay a $25 fine and $132 in court costs but serve no jail time or probation.

The county sheriff's department set up the video camera after a passer-by reported seeing the underwater cage in a secluded tributary of the lake.

About 20 minutes after the tournament began, Engleking was recorded loading five bass onto his boat from the cage, authorities said.

At tournament's end, his catch was judged the top of the day in terms of weight.

This S.O.B. got off way to easy. It's a shame when people have to stoop to these measures. To bad he could'nt go visit Bubba for awhile in the slammer.

Anyone know where I can get a 49" cage?

WHAT? Oh I'm sorry Mr. Cabela's manager I was gonna bring them back after the tournament. Yes, actually the water is nice here in the fish tank.

It's not mentioned, but most likely this individual would be banned for life in competitive Bass fishing.

FYI: The same thing happened early in the beginnings of B.A.S.S. The guy was caught by Ray Scott. The angler was banned permanently from competition. Scott states in his book that one of the main worries in beginning competive angling for money was how to deal with cheaters.

Hi John,
Well it may be urban myth, or should I say suburban myth, but the cheating musky angler story I have heard is this one.

Prior to a musky tournament (I believe this was to have taken place near Eagle River)a few years back, one of the local guys there caught a high 40's muskie the day before the tournament was to take place. Being a rather creative soul, what he did was boat the fish, put a small chain through her gills and then linked the chain to a boat anchor. Then attached to the boat anchor was a floating marker. Went to shore, registered for the tournament and then started out the next day to fish for cash! Supposedly he was turned in by his neighbors on the lake!

The cult classic B movie "Blood Hook" has a couple different guys who used big minnow tanks to house & feed some big muskies, to try to use them as their tournament fish.

Art imitates life, I guess.

Not very sportmanship-like.

Well, I only fish in trophy tournaments anyway. So all a cheater would get from those is notoriety and a piece af hardware for the shelf, and limited bragging rights for the year...

I think this guy should have been lowered to the bottom of the lake in his little cheaters-cage...

Later,
papa

As with anything, people will never cease to amaze. There are folks killed every day for less than $50; so go figure....[:blackeye:]

Thats the nice thing about our trophy tournaments, you don't have to win it to get first prize. Imagine you cheated at your local tournament , you get your little trophy to hang on the wall . Every time you look up at that thing you would be reminded of what a scumbag you really are.
On the other hand you show up to our tounament and don't catch diddley squat . But you still have a good chance to win that 3 day guided trip by Marc Thorpe to get you on that 50 plus fish or 1 of many quality donated baits .

[] so don't be a chump ,play fair

Good Luck to all and good drilling to you ice fisherman[;)]
