when would you use a buzzer over a different type of topwater? I think I'm going to use some buzzbaits this summer and I was wondering when and where it's best to switch to buzzbaits. Thanks for any advice

Over the years that I have been guiding, it has always surprised me, that so few anglers like to throw buzzers. [8)]

I like to use them when the water
temps get up around the 70 degree
mark and higher.
Here on the Big V, that may only be a small window of a few weeks.

They cover water fast and I have had fish blast them in weeds and over the rocks, sometimes as deep as 15 or 20ft.

They allow you to fish a topwater
in places where other baits just won't work.
Try tossing a topraider into some
thick lillypads or reeds. [:p]

Divani,

Terry is right, they are great lures to use in thicker cover and shine in the reeds. Most are weedless and they allow you to go in there and get those fish that nobody else is fishing for.

Hi Dirk,
During my bass fishing days we use to pound the bass during a prespawn bite with buzzbaits. Buzzers were kings and there was something about the sound that seem to really tick of the fish. We'd also get into some decent pike also while bassing. The Black and Orange or Firetiger colors always seem to work very well. It appears that pike like an orange blade and that would be my first choice(Pike seem to like Orange on anything it seems). I picked up a Boogerman's Buzzbait at the Chicago show to use on LOTW this coming summer for some slop skies. Like has been said already, they really shine in the reeds and thick, weedy bays.

catch ya later,
Krappie

Agree with the comments in the previous replies. The only thing I would add is, I especially like buzzbaits when there is a fairly good chop on the surface. I think they are easier for the fish to home in on than perhaps other types of surface baits. They are tracking straight at a fairly constant speed and make enough racket to draw the muskies attention. I personally prefer working buzzbaits to bulging bucktails although no one can deny that bulging has boated many skis.

I made some buzzers with a balse wooden body and a large buzzblade (inline spinner) to work slowly in shallow water like the drains I fish in in The Netherlands and I must say it works great but I haven't fished them in the surface so far, always subsurface. I will have to try it.

If I can get that double buzz spinnerbait and some others, I'm sure it will work. As long as I stick with it for a while.

So, so far I can conclude that rougher water is better for buzzers than calm water.

How about the speed of your retrieve? Do you work them slowly or faster or medium speed?

Do colors even matter for these baits? I see most of them have black hair or skirts with a nickel blade.

I also ordered a boogerman buzzer which I'll be getting soon. It just looked like a solid bait, though maybe a bit large (read heavy, it weighs 1oz) to keep it on top at a slow retrieve speed.

thanks everybody for your replies []

I had Violent Strike design a monster buzzer for me a few seasons ago, and really like throwing it on my Canadian trips, especially. This buzzer has a 7/0 main hook and a 7/0 trailer, and weighs over an ounce and a half.

I use the lure in the 'dollar pads' on the Goon, LOTW, and Rainy Lake where nothing else will get through, and have taken numerous Muskies and LOTS of nice pike on the bait.

There is a picture of the lure onsite in the database, I will see if I can find it.
