Probably some variation in wich one you have but really slow works for me.

Great question....I've never had one before but am also curious how people use them?

In thick vegetation? Just like any other topwater? Over openwater? Who knows.

Just a steady, slow retrieve?

Flaptails are retrieved at a slow to medium pace. You want the tail to kind of flip flop on the surface. Slap the surface at a staggered cadence. If tail is spinning like a buck tail, then the bracket is set too low in the water .

Slow to medium, a steady paced retrieve. Rough water, even whitecaps is absolutely fine. So is calm water.
