Have a 2003 yamaha 115 2stroke oil injected. Is it bad for the motor trolling at 500-600 rpm's ?

I am sure some yamaha guys will chime in. With two strokes you run the risk of fouling plugs Some say that just use fuel cleaner and run it wide open to clean out the system. IF you think you are going to do any extensive trolling you could probably find a nice used 4stroke kicker for under$1500 and save the hours on the main engine.

I bought a 1988 Johnson 2-stroke for $680 on Ebay. 6 gallons of fuel will let me troll 4mph for about 15 hours....maybe 20-25 hours. Those older Johnson 2-strokes are hard to beat....super durable. The motor paid for itself in one season.

Plus, it keeps the hours off my old ancient 45 year old 115HP Johnson.

Hiya,

With the 4 stroke engines and Yamaha's designed trolling system, you will be fine using it to troll. Those engines are quite efficient to do so.

Now...if you are trying to really slow down to a crawl like some people do for walleyes, then a kicker or electric would be the way to go, as even the bigger motors cannot always troll down far enough.

Make sure the motor is running at proper temps at idle. If motor is running cold it will compound any rich running issues. Run Ringfree or Quicklean in your gas to get longer plug life. Running synthetic oil will help too.

I missed something here...

I missed it was a 2 stroke.

If your motor is set up correctly, it should be idling at roughly 800 RPM's... Might be a struggle running it at 500 - 600, but it can be done... just make sure you open it up a bit and definitely run a synthetic oil like amsoil...cleaner burning which will help reduce plug fouling...
