| When I have my motor all the way down and try to trim it up the bottom 1/4 almost makes a grounding sound. I assume that it is low on fluid, but do not know how to check it. Its a 2006 yamaha f115.
Any ides on how to check/fix? It still works, but its a struggle at the bottom.

Location: Savage, MN | I have a 2003 F115 and have the same issue however I haven't considered it as a grinding noise, rather similar to a "lower gear ratio". Hopefully that makes sense to somebody who is more familiar with these motors. I was under the impression it was to allow for slower, smaller adjustments in the trim while on the move so as to not over do it. |

Location: Savage, MN | It is a very similar noise but doesn't seem to be a loud or as constant as yours does, maybe its just the video to. I have my boat serviced every fall and the have never said anything and has done it since the day I bought it. Hopefully VMS Steve or anybody else really good with these outboards can help. |

| I assume this is where I would add the fluid, but when I open the cap, some does come out.

| I don't think that would be it. I also have a Merc and the cap is about the height of the transom on the port side.
Important: When checking or adding fluid, make sure the motor is trimmed all the way up. Otherwise the cylinder will be under pressure and you should expect some fluid to leak out. |

Location: Sun Prairie, WI | I don't think its low on oil. I do know on my older mariner you have to check it with the motor all the way up. Open it up with the motor down and your gonna get an oil bath. Im thinking its a pivot point creaking. I would grease everything you can. Also could be something in the 2 trim cylinders. Only seams to do it when its on them. |

| Well guys, I flushed it out and and filled it up with ATF. It seems to have helped, I plan on flushing it out again when I find some tilt/trim fluid.
Hoping the ATF doesnt do to much damage. I can't imagine it makes a huge difference. It was a bear to get it full. |

If the ambient temperature is below 50 degrees or so, the fluid is thicker and cannot flow as fast as the trim unit works. I had this same thing on my 2003 yamaha 90. when it warmed up, the sound went away.
I think your trim unit is running just fine. It is the same sound mine would give until things warmed up.

Location: Minnesota: where it's tough to be a sportsfan! | More than likely you have sand in the seal area from loading and off loading the boat. I have gone out in open water and have run the motor up and down a few times to remove the grit. I never let it get too bad though, when I hear it I try to get it cleared. |

Location: Not far enough north! | Sounds like something is binding on a shaft. Could possibly be some kind of problem on the pivot point. It sounds like there is a burr on the shaft and once it clears that spot it works normally. I would do a little more that change the oil. If it was low the motor would not go all the way up but work normally on the bottom end... I would raise it all the way up and check the cylinder shafts for damage and for sure grease all the fittings on the motor.

| I have the same outboard and it makes the same noise on the trim cylinders, like kjgmh said put a little lube on the ends of the trim cylinders problem solved, may have to do it several times a year but it works. |

Location: Minnesota: where it's tough to be a sportsfan! | I use a waterproof grease on mine now and have really been impressed with how long that lasts. Low water years this is more of a problem as you can make a mes of it loading and unloading. |
