Location: SE WI | Hey guys,
I just started musky fishing last year and I am definitely hooked. I have bought some baits and got some more for Christmas. Right now I have close to 30 baits and plan on getting some more. I need a bag or box or tackle storage system. I looked at the Flambeau Maximizer, soft sided bag, which lets you hang about 50 baits. I don't have my own boat yet, so portability is a consideration for me. I probably have the most buck tails, with a few dawgs and rubber baits, and also a handful of hard baits. Any advice would be good.

Location: sneaking out to get on the water ;-) | I have the old maximizer that holds 100 baits and it is awesome. Bucktails you will be able to put even more than it says. It holds up to mag dawgs. Best part is the extras you can pack in it, tools, camers, maps, and then some. I've been looking around for another like mine but it seems they stopped making it. |

| Here's a valuable tip: Begin using the 3700 (Plano designation) sized boxes as a part of a larger modular system. They're easy to handle, store, segregate lure types and organize everything you may wish to acquire, but, the trick is that you'll need to locate a seller, distributor or manufacturer of nylon (cordura or similar) shell bags that are precisely fitted, super-light, durable and weather-resistant carrier for the 3700 boxes and the misc. tools, gloves leaders & etc.
When I was beginning to deal with your problem, I'd found an exhibitor (at the huge Chicago Fishing, Camping and Outdoor Show in Rosemont many-MANY years ago), named MARINELINE PRODUCTS, Inc. (Park Ridge, IL) which sold all type of custom-sized bags. carriers and caddies (boats, trucks, SUV's & etc.), and for Fisherman, Hunters, Shooters and Police, Fire and EMT's. After I saw what could be done with his 3700 bag, I never worried about lure storage again! The bags look great, clean up very nicely when they get cruddy and they last and last and LAST. ( I suppose you could even customize logos and/or embroider them)?
I'd always urged the owner to show his products to the muskie angling segment of the broader market, unfortunately I don't believe he has ever done that, possibly because he's not an angler? The Company does not have a website. But. I'm certain there are others out there too...

Location: SE WI | Do you compartmentalize each bucktail then? I have seen a couple guys use systems with 3700 boxes, and that's what I use in my big bag for all my other fishing stuff, it just seems like a less efficient use of space than hanging baits. Also, it's interesting you mention the Fire/EMS portion of that, beecause that is what I do when I'm not fishing.  |

| Now bucktails and 3700 boxes are a different matter - entirely. Not efficient nor compatible, so they deserve a separate solution. (The 3700 size Spinnerbait boxes are not ideal, but are functional and compatible for bag storage).
I've converted a small, soft-sided suitcase into a large "wallet" for the tails. I use foam "sheets" or "cards" cut to size as dividers and attach the baits to them on both sides. It works by being compact & holding a lot of them, providing cushioned storage and perhaps, it might float too, (I don't need to test that because I refuse to be that clumsy)!
But, it's still a idea in development which has its flaws.
There's probably some carrier out there I haven't come across yet that could do a better job for bucktails, but I haven't seen it. |

| Looks like they only make the maximizer cube now. I have both the large and the cube but have found out that the cube holds all the baits i need on my fishing trips. Lakewood tackle makes several different size soft sided tackle bags too. |

Going to have to dissagree here. You can hold 16 DCG in a 3700 if you do it right. Get the slotted box, you can lay 4 per slot, just have them alternating direction. You can do 8 Super Models this way as well. I store all my bucktails this way. It can be a bit of a PITA to get one on the bottom of a pile, but it is very space effecicient.
You can store rubber in the unslotted boxes, usually 3 Pounders per box. However, Plano makes a larger box that can hangle 7 pounders, which is what I use to store those baits. I then store the mag sized stuff in a non-slotted 3700.
I use my 3700s to store Rubber and Bucktails, which I then keep in lockable rod storage in my boat, 4-5 boxes in all. Solves the storage issue for the biggest baits. Then I use a pedestal pal or as small justencase for whatever else I want to bring along, the pedestal pal also stores all the release tools. Makes for a lot less clutter in the boat by leveraging onboard storage. |

| I used to be all about storing my baits but during the season it is a huge waste of time. I have two large shallow plastic bins, one for trolling and one for casting. When I get done with the bait I drop it in the bin, then if I have time I store it later. |

Location: SE WI | I saw the Just Encase Boxes at the Milwaukee show. Anybody have any bad experiences with those? They look pretty awesome for only about $140. I thought they'd be a lot more.

| I have had the Just Encase Boxes for some time now, really the best there is out there. A CUSTOM made box that is real quality. All of these boxes are made by one man in a small shop. You will NOT find a better box on the market, just plain and simple. Bob Schmitt the manufacture of the boxes is also one of the greatest guys, if for some reason you would ever have an issue with a box he would be more than sure to take care of you I am sure. Great Guy and Great Custom Made Boxes. Far better than any of the competition! Just ask any of his pro staff...

| I got a few of those milk crates from menards, cut some 3" vinyl gutter material and inserted them in the crates. Works great and costs about $4 a box. I made like 8 of these things and they would pretty well. |

Location: SE WI | Still haven't bought a box or bag. Anybody used the "Special Mate" Boxes? This seems like a decent system, but I've never seen one in person to judge the quality. Here's one listing on them.

Location: deephaven mn | the 3700 system is hard to beat. great way to organize, using the big box method
can be a pain. every fishing outing is different. with 3700 system you can a adjust as needed. you may not want to bring every single bait you own on each trip. once you fill the big what do you do? throw down another $150 for the big box again and start filling that one? now you have two big boxes to lug around. or just but a few more 3700's |

| No it is bigger than that. I'll see if I can get a model number off of mine. The box you linked will hold 3 pounders, I use those also. IMO, the key with Rubber is get them in as snug as possible. That keeps the hooks from punturing the baits too much.
My system is to store the big Pounder box, plus 3 3700 boxes in my rod locker. That basically covers a large offering of bucktails and rubber. Then I use a small Just Encase for baits that need hanging. I also have a Pedestal Pal. For really big tubes and any bait that has a nice epoxy finish I think hanging them is better than the 3700s. Otherwise the hook rash builds up fast. |

| I use old camera bags that the 3700 boxes fit in you can get them at flea markets or thrift stores.Then make them custom to your application. |
