My dad has a Power Drive V2 on his boat and this past weekend we were out for 6 hours and the trolling motor kept dying on us. It worked fine for about the first hour and then after that we couldn't get it to keep going for more then 15 seconds. This was after having the battery on the charger for the entire night so I don't think it was dead. It also wasn't tripping the breaker because trying to reset the breaker didn't do anything. Any thoughts?

Check your trolling motor plug too.

Maybe a bad relay?

Could also be a bad battery. Have it checked. I ran into that a while back. I would also check the plug as Steve suggested although if it is only a year old hopefully that isn't the problem although it would be cheaper than a new battery (or two).

I ran into an issue where the power cable goes into the housing on the trolling motor. If you are using the motor and it quits, try wiggling those wires where they go into the back of that housing. When I did that the motor would take right off, then kill, then take off again.
So I took the cover off and tightened down the screws for the cable support inside there. No problems since.

Out of curiosity are you using foot pedal or copilot?

Check the plug with the 24volt there is a jumper in the plug make sure all screws are tight. I tore my whole boat and trolling motor apart on the lake last year.

OK, thats another thing to check too. Those dang footpedals are known to cause problems. If you have an extra or a buddy with one, try switching to see if you still experience the problems. Those switches inside get all grimed up. Usually its turning that gets affected, not so much the on/off business you are experiencing, but if you are using "continuous" on the pedal and its flaking out maybe that is the problem.

How long before it would work again? Some breakers are auto reseting, and it takes a bit of time. It could be your batteries are low, causing more current draw, and tripping the breakers?

Rewiring is not required, even if you have a bad connection. Just need to locate the problem, and fix it.

Exactly. It is VERY unlikely that the problem is the wiring itself. My guess is that the problem is one of these:

1) the foot pedal or its connection to the unit.
2) a faulty connecting at the plug or a faulty plug
3) the battery and/or the battery connection

Don't have an exact time. The first few times hitting the reset worked but then it stopped working. Sometimes I'd try it after 5 minutes and it would work, other times after 10 minutes it would work, but every time I tried the breaker reset first.

I had a similar issue with my last powerdrive. First I replaced the pedal that was bad. That did not fix the problem. Then I replaced the armature which was bad according to the repair shop. That was good for 1.5 days. Then they said to replace the wiring in the head. That worked for the few months I had before I got rid of it. Then the 2nd owner had to repair it. It could be a lot of things. I would take it in.

Do you have an auto-resetting breaker? Mine behaves the same way when I run it hard when it's really hot, like it was this weekend. My quick-and-dirty solution is to open that hatch to the battery compartment to let it cool down.
