Muskie Fishing -> General Discussion -> Hook Wire

Message Subject: Hook Wire

Subject: Hook Wire

I got a new idea for making hooks. Anyone have any ideas as to where I can find a supplier for such wire ? As a last resort I will have to fly out to Denver and get an Eagle Claw employee drunk. After Liquor Mortis sets in I will use my Psyc-o powers to extract a "tell all"............................................Thanks

Raze1- I think you're looking at "spring wire", i.e., very similar to what most guy's use for jerk bait leaders, except larger diameter.. However I think it's selection is a fine balance between malability (ability to form the point & the barb plus shape the hook) versus tensile strength to keep it's shape under pressure from the fish.

The manufacture of hooks has been a closely guarded trade since man first tied a line to a piece of sharp bone. Prior to the industrial age, the hook manufacturing process was a cottage industry in the British Isles. Different parts of the manufacturing processes where carried out by individual's in their homes(many children, even whole families), i.e., some specialized in cutting/forming the barb's, points, eye's, etc.

If your idea is really unique, you may want to apply for a patent.

Thanks, Al !
There's a wealth of information here at MF. I had metallurgy in college and learned only enough to be dangerous. I'm sure finding the wire will be the easy part. The harder part will be in the laws that govern hook configuration. The hardest part will be finding a point that is sharp enough to penetrate the red tape that surrounds the USPTO.

Hi Raze1- opps! Really didn't answer your question, i.e., where to find wire? See->

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=Spring+Wire

There's a really good web site which has good information on making springs & using spring wire. You're right forming the barb's & points is the hard part. See-> http://home.earthlink.net/~bazillion/springs.html

Unscrupulous Patent Attorney's will bleed you poor. As for the USPTO -> Best place to start is to fully understand the process-> http://www.uspto.gov/

Good Luck

Thanks again Al,
Yes, I know the USPTO all too well. I invented a machine a few years back and have opended a few doors in the process. A patent only gives one the right to sue. After all things are weighed, one is still forced to take a gamble. The goods news is that basic patent searches can be done by anyone at the site you mentioned. It's a fun place to see what others have come up with over the years. My intentions are merely to get some wire and play around a bit and see what I can come up with. With all the compitition, both foreign and domestic it would be very hard to come up with a hook design that hasn't been thought of or even tested.
Can't wait to check out these other sites........RAZE
