| Message Subject: NEW TOURNAMENT RULE IDEAS?? | |||

Posts: 1220 | OK, I’m bored with winter and just want to read some tournament stuff, (Even if I have to write it!) So, my topic idea is: What would you change about the tournament rules “in general.” I’m not talking about any specific tournament or trail. Just one rule or practice you’d like to see in order to make it a better experience for you. Here’s mine: BOAT INSPECTION: The one thing that really grinds me (and which I also think is dumb) is how we all open all the compartment doors and sort of slowly drive by a dock where the person on the dock is both, not seeing, and not really trying see in there anyway. Then the guy who is fishing alone, stops his boat right in your way, so he can close all the lids hoping he doesn’t get run over. And, midway through the pack, the water starts to get chopped up so you really have to pass by too far to see in or too close not to hit the dock. So, yes I go back to my bass experience again, but I like the way they do it better. You just drive up to a specified dock or pontoon BEFORE THE EASE-OUT (pontoon is the really classy way-especially when it’s dark, get a complete inspection that includes safety equipment and kill switch operation. They check off your number and it all done-all clean, and the ease-out looks like it can be on TV. OK, what would the rest of you guys (gals) change if it were up to you? Maybe the tournament directors will read the thread and you will get what you want????

Posts: 427 | This will be my first year fishing musky tourneys but the bass tourney that I always fished they checked the boat before you launched, usually when you checked in. On dry ground they can walk around the boat and get a good look in all compartments. Have never had them check the kill switch but they almost always checked the rest of the safety gear.

Posts: 1220 | Ramp inspections (prior to launch) work great for smaller events at multi-lane ramps with loads of parking. The downside is that everybody must use the same ramp and it does not work as well when the ramp is conjested or smallish. I like it when you get on the water any which way you can including staying on the water too! It leaves more options and less congestion. Without trying to sound negative, and I am almost never negative about any tournament operator, having a real inspection means that they have to be the one to do a real inspection...it adds work, maybe cost too...but I think it brings us all up a level in the respectability of what we are doing. I'd also like them to get Faith Hill to sing the National Anthem like FLW and BASS does...and real US Service men and women to do the Color Guard too....or am I thinking just a tad above the curve???

Posts: 19 | How about the possibility of getting a small set amount of points for catching the right species but not big enough to count for the tourney? just to make the drive and gas worth it. I am not saying call the judge boat over but if you and your partner happen to land a shortie then snap a quick pic and release it. Two years ago we drove all the way down to cave run ky and they were in process of having a huge flood. we managed to catch a 29 1/2" but didnt count as the legal size is 30". We had a 15 hr drive home with only our 10 points in attendance and guilt we couldnt do better

Posts: 1220 | Off the subject a bit, but I talked with the Hefners last week at the Wausau show. They are excited about this year's Spring Classic and I am totally excited to be there too! Totally classy event where bragging rights would be great to have! Dedicated people who work really hard at this! Marty Forman

Posts: 10 | Would be nice to see all tournaments reward extra points for BIG fish. Reward the guys that know how to target giants instead of the guys the troll for a bunch of small fish. I hate seeing 2 dinks beat out a slob.

Posts: 1220 | I actually had two bare minimum 34's and beat a guy who caught a very legit 49.5 on Pewaukee a few years back. A lot of people thought he should have won, but it was just a "straight inches" type of event. I know the lake very well, it's probably the single most fished-most caught lake in the state...but his fish was likely to be one of the 5 or 6 biggest fish caught that entire year. He did deserve the trophy but I have so painfully few...I'm keeping it!

Posts: 67 | I would personally like to see only the top 5 places pay out. Have sixth place get a free entry into their next tournament. Also keep the money gap between 1st and 2nd place a little bit closer. I feel the top five and especially the top three places should be rewarded for their accomplishment.

Posts: 49 | I agree completely with the idea that the money should be spread more even. It doesn't matter how many places you pay but a general formula needs to be used. It seems like we never know how many places will be paid or how much each place will get. Why not X entries = 8 places to be paid and 1st gets 22% of the entries and down the line. I will not be fishing this year because last year our team caught the biggest fish on Sat and it was a 2 day tourney we finished 7th and got ZIP.... 55 entries at over $350 per boat. Just doesn't add up for me in anyway. I played softball tournies for 20 yrs. and they were always full with waiting lists. Most paid 400-300-200-100 with a $100 entry. I don't think fishing tournies should pay that close together, but not everything for 1st and 3rd place is barely your money back

Posts: 49 | Junkman I always wondered why there is a mandatory mtg the night before?? DNR Reg?? I travel for work and 3 of 4 tournies last yr I was unable to attend the Fri mtg. Lucky my partner made it. I'm guessing guys from MN & Chicago area have the same problem and don't fish because they can't make mtg. Can it be done Sat morning before take off??? Something should be done for teams that want to fish but can't get there. 2nd issue. Any idea why we are unable to transport a legal WI Muskie 40" or bigger. I know a lot of guys don't like having to show a big fish spot to another competitor. If its a legal fish we should be able to put in livewell and drive the fish to someone else in field to verify etc......

I have also called ahead sometimes and been given permission to get my number early in the morning-depends on the tournament director. I know they want people to gather for the sponsors, to hear any rule changes, out of bounds and etc. Plus I always like going out to eat with a bunch of guys after. #2 you can transport the forty if the director allows it. Reason you don't is that you will have "taken possession" of the fish and have to QUIT fishing for the day.

Location: Minocqua, WI | Also agree with the formula... there needs to be a "set in stone" type of payout on a sliding scale that is obeyed, not adjusted from tournament to tournament. When I pay my entry fee, I want to know how it will be paid out when its over. X amount of teams applied to a % payout scale based on rank. Top 5 unless its a very large tournament.

Posts: 67 | A prewritten formula that is posted would be nice! A guessing game on what the payouts are and having the payouts change from one tournament to the next needs to stop.
