Anyone got any info on Baudette, MN. I might have a job offer soon from a company located there. I'm really excited, but a little scared. I live in Indianapolis, IN...big city, easy winters.

It says here on the internet that it's only 1,500 people, but has a new school and hospital.

Anyone live there or know anyone who does?? Property is really cheap. Really cheap.

Minutes from LOTW. That's a big plus. How bad are the winters?? I'm used to living in the city, but I have enough hill billy and red neck in me....I think.

Would you move up there?? I'd be making the same money, probably more. Plus, the cost of living is a lot lower.

Nice town, but a bit cold in the winter. My college roomate was from there so I spent some time in town.

-20 and -50 below windchills for a few weeks in a row in the winter are very common. You have to plug in your car and run 5 weight oil. You have to have a 18" extension on your ice auger or you wont get thru the ice on LOTW.

The normal family has a second home in Zipple bay during the winter. The homes are 10x20 with fold out sofas, stoves and nice holes in the floors to dip a line. Snow gets real deep too, just follow the road graders out on the ice and look for the street signs to find your second home.

But you would be an hour drive from LOTW muskie fishing 5 months out of the year.

Stevester, remember the old song that said " Indiana wants me, but I can't go back there"....find a copy of this, listen to it, THEN make that decision! [;)] Can't remember who sang it, or the actual name of the song, but no doubt someone on the board does, and perhaps they can help narrow your search, making your choice that much easier.....[::)]

Sponge,
I know that old tune.
Problem is, I have family here in Indiana and Ohio. It's gonna be a tough decision. It's gonna be tough to leave the job I have now too.

At least the interview will be in January or February....if I get one, and I'll be ablet to go up there in the heart of the winter to see how bad it actually is.

But living an hour from the Angle is one heck of a temptation. All that water to explore and learn. Gives me goose bumps right now thinking about it.

Baudette is on LOTW and has some great fishing. Close to some great Musky water. Now that I no longer work I plan on spending a lot of time there.[] [] You need a remote border pass to fish Canada water. [;)]

Steve:

I have lived in Warroad for the past 41 years, which is 36 miles west down highway 11 from Baudette.

Baudette is the county seat of Lake of the Woods county, it does have a brand new school, and a hospital, and is generally thought of as a pretty nice town up here in the north country. There are the usual number of small business in the area, but no Wally-Marts or shopping malls. Solway is the main single employer in Baudette, but the the tourist industry is also a very big business. There must be 15-20 resorts along the Rainy river, including some very nice ones.

Baudette itself is located on the Rainy River, and is about 8-9 miles fron the Lake of the Woods and is known as the walleye capital of the world, and has Willie the walleye (about a 20' concrete one) sitting across the road from the Holiday station. The population of the entire Lake of the Woods county is only 4,443, so it's not very crowded.

The surrounding countryside is a mixture of very flat land that borders on being a Tamarack swamp and some fairly good farm land. There is fairly good duck and goose hunting, as well as deer, and partridge. However, it's not the scenic Canadian Cambrian Shield stuff you expect to see in NW Onratio.

The weather in the area is generally pretty cool throughout the year, with an occassional hot period in July or August. The ice generally goes off the Lake around the first week in May, and the Lake usually freezes up around the first week in November. We typically will have snow on the ground from November to April, but like all weather that does change some. We have about a foot of snow on the ground right now. It can get very cold at times, it's 16 here right now. To see what the averages are go to www.weather.com and take a look. We've had -50 degree below without the wind chill factor at times, but that's not the norm. All vehicles have a plug-in heaters. It helps in you like ice fishing, and hockey to live up here.

The fishing in this area of the lake is primarily for walleyes, and once you get out of the Rainy River past Pine Island the lake looks like the Atlantic Ocean, and all you can see is water for as far as you can see. As far as I know there is no muskie fishing out of any of the Minnesota resorts that are located in the Baudette area. There are very few or no muskies on the Minnesota side of the lake. It's a long way over some very big water to get to the island part of the lake where the muskies live. I don't think there are very many muskie fishermen in Baudette, and there are almost none in Warroad. Surprisingly many people in the area don't even know there are muskies in the lake.

However, at Baudette you are about 35 miles from Morson, and Sabaskong Bay by road. You are about 100 miles from the Angle (36 to Warroad and 65 to Youngs Bay) by road which puts you in some very good muskie water. If you go to Morson you will check through Canadian customs so there is no need for a Remote Area Border Crossing Permit. You are also within easy driving distance from a number of other good muskie lakes on the east side of the LOTWs, including Clearwater/Pipestone, Crow (Kakagi), Dogpaw/Caviar and others, as well as Whitefish Bay on the lake. It's still a long drive to Lac Suel and Eagle, but they are all within a half days drive.

Here's my take on this, I would not base my decision to move to the area on any sort of muskie fishing possibilities, as believe it or not that's not the most important thing in the world. I would base in more on the job possibilities (which is where you will be spending the majority of your time), and will you and your family be happy living in far northern Minnesota with it's lack of ammenidities (it's a 6 hour drive to Minneapolis), and some rather severe weather at times. It's not for everyone.

Any more questions drop me an E-mail

Doug Johnson

Hi Steve,
Lake Vermilion is only a 2.5 hour
drive from Baudette!!!!!

I'm a kid from the city and it was an easy transition for me to move to the north country.

Rainy Lake is only an hour or so and it also has muskies. [:p]

Bemidji is only an hour away with a nice senic drive thru a massive tamerack swamp. Grand Rapids is just a little bit futher.

If I had to live somewhere, Bemidji would be the place. Nice town and some great water there in town and near by. Only two hours to Sabaskong bay too.
