Wondering if anyone has built a Jerkbait rod out of a Thorne Bros predator? I am wanting to build a jerk rod to handle 5 to 8 inch phantoms, hellhounds, and lures like that with the occasional larger lure (10 inch cabbage ghost, etc). If you have built one what were the specs? What rod did you build it on ( MH, H,XH)? Did you take any off the tip? Thanks for the help in advance.

I'm having one built right now. I went with a XH. Had them shorten to 8ft 4in. Didn't chop any off the tip. I think the XH is a good blank for the task. Very capable with lighter gliders but should cast the big weagle and hellhound better. I prefer longer rods than most. I've heard of guys going down to 7ft 6in and 7ft 10in.

I'm having one built as well. On the heavy blank. 8'3" , franks custom rods is making it. If I remember right, he's taking an inch off the tip. I plan to use it for 8" and smaller gliders/jerk baits such as phantoms , hellhounds, weagles, etc. I throw the bigger ones on another rod. I had been using a st Croix premier 76mh. I wanted a longer rod, lighter, and a little heavier action. I'm hoping this turns out as planned.

I stole this Bob Turgeon's blog on another site...

8' Predator MH, with the last of the Lommis steel blanks dwindling this setup was to be used as a glider rod...in truth I like the Loomis a hair better (The ultimate Jerkbait Rod) from last year BUT I paired this rod up with an old Diawa 3000 series and have been using it to pitch jigs, tubes and spinner baits into the thick cabbage with great success. I love longer rods but when your making dozens of quick short casts sommething a little shorter is easier to handle and accuracy is way better. It works well on Gliders etc but again I thought the Loomis was a hair better...great for what I am using it for.

I want to keep it light so I was thinking a heavy or med heavy with some tip cut to achieve the proper stiffness. I will probably build one in the 7'6" to 8' range. Not sure how much tip to chop to get the proper pop needed to run 5 to8 inch Jerkbaits. I will also use it for some WTD top water .

I have 4 Predators and love them all. I think the MH is a good option. As mentioned above give Lonnie a Shout and he can give you some scenarios to think of. I have a rod like Bob describes above (the loomis Steel) which is close to the MH Pred and I have a 300EJ that I put a paddle handle on (instead of the stock Power handle) and it works gliders like a charm...

Yeah I have recently discovered the joy of fishing with Thorne bros predator rods. I had a XH built that I used this fall and landed a 48" the first time I had it out. I should be picking up my new heavy predator soon, and now that I got my tax returns back its time to get a custom jerk rod. I will be putting a 300 ej with a paddle handle on the jerk rod. I love Thorne predators and will stop by the store and talk with Lonnie. Just wanted to get some input from you guys. Thanks.

I have a 9' MH Predator (nothing of fthe tip) and it is a nice rod but a little soft for larger jerkbaits. It works great for smaller gliders, topwater (favorite rod for that) and smaller bucktails. If your going to use it for large jerkbaits you might want to take a few inches off the tip or look into the heavy.
Like everyone is saying, give Lonnie a call and he will get you what you need.

No....my MH is a stock 9 footer split grip with the Lonnie Fore-grip. Its a machine for Jr Cow Girls, Showgirls, Pace Makers, smaller twitch and crank baits. I have a 300 EJ on mine....balances out nicely.

Talked to Lonnie today. He suggested building on the heavy blank and taking an inch off the tip. Now I just have to save my pennies and place an order. Man do I love those predators. Thorne Bros is a top notch company and Lonnie and staff really know their stuff.

Great option. If your not opposed to a split grip that helps keep weight off the back and the Lonnie Grip up Front makes a sweet combo on a jerk bait rod...

I will definitely go with the Lonnie grip but I'm not a huge fan of split grips. It will be syncork though.
