I picked up a new to me boat I am thinking about putting on a keel guard its a 04 ranger clearly hasn't had one yet and shows some minor scratching from beaching on sand I suppose but no chips... Is it worth the coin to add a keel guard now or save for something else

Absolutely a good investment. Should be a must on any descent glass fishing boat

Yes; no question about it. Get a KeelShield. I think they're easier to install than a KeelGuard and are a bit better for quality.

Will these slow a boat down (friction?)

I'm sure there's a microsopic coefficient of friction that decreases your hole shot and top end by .000003%, but ultimately, no. Depending on how long you get it, it should be mostly or entirely out of the water while on plane. They don't run the whole length of the boat. I think the KS for a 20' is 7' or 8'.

From my experience with them I would put it around the bow eyelet above and below in case you hit a bad landing. Then I would cut it and install it farther down on the keel. Most of the time the gusrd ends about wher the boat makes strong beach contact. check the bargin caves-outlets for fairly good savings on them.
