I have a rod I need to ship to a guy who wants to buy it in MN..I packaged it in a 9' tube, and called SpeeDee delivery, they told me it was "oversized" and wanted like 50 bux to ship, it only weighs like 5 lbs... how do you guys send rods economically?? suggestions?
thanks

I think FedEx is the cheapest. Last time I sent one it wasn't more than $25 if I remember right.

I have shipped in 9ft tubes. I have always used speedees. Unless they recently changed there policy I would call them back. Normally it is like $13.00

Brad I also have tried to ship Speedy from the same area as you and ended up going UPS. Speedy is cheap if there is a local office to go to but I had to go the UPS Store to ship it and UPS charges a convenience fee which made it more expensive. That was my experience at least.

I'd say UPS too. I've shipped with them alot. Post office can get it done, but not sure about 9'. I know they have some dumb restrictions and I've been turned away from the PO because I had a box I wanted to send parcel, but had a Priority Mail sticker on it that I covered with magic marker and they WOULD NOT SHIP IT. The guy at the UPS store a while back told me, "no kidding man, we'll ship anything" and they shipped it in the USPS box. Same with rods, I had a rod tube once and USPS was cheaper...had they accepted it. They told me it was 2" too long. UPS shipped it no questions asked, for like $18.

Just a note. I have shipped with UPS and Fed Ex and on some occassions after paying them for shipping, they have USPS deliver the package. That is a bunch of bull paying that much money to Fed Ex and UPS and then they pass it on to the Postal Service to deliver. This shipping stuff is getting to the point where online buying is not as cheap as one would expect. The other problem though is if you can't get it local then they have got you. A no win situation. Tackle Industries ships with Fed Ex when they ship their rods.

I have both a UPS account and Fed Ex account at business. It was way cheaper to ship via Fed-Ex...HOWEVER, 9 ft is the limit on excessive handling charges. Use a carpet tube, cut to 1 inch shorter that 9ft or use 107inch length or less on package dimensions and it will work just fine. I actually shipped the empty tube to the customer and then back to me for around $40 total. UPS was much more for home delivery of that size/length. To my knowledge, USPS will not ship 9ft length. Obviously, it depends on the length of the rod/package too. Good luck.

SpeeDee Delivery? I'd call them again and perhaps speak with someone else? Just keep trying, somebody at SpeeDee understands their unique territory and opportunity to customers like us (Forum traders). Typically, they handle tubes to 10' in length.

Their parcel pick-up is outstanding, but ask them if there's a drop off location by you. Your savings may justify your effort of a trip? Good luck!

Turkeyt; fedex and ups daily have parcels drops to the postal service which they have no time to deliver. That is how expensive they really are. Fedex and ups charge 2 - 3 $ more for small packages, pocket the money, then pay the postal service to deliver. It is like contracting out. Your comment about shipping not being cheap all has to do with fuel costs. Have you walked into a gander mountain lately, or a mall??? Nobody in the places!!! Cyber buying is at an all time high. Driving 30 miles round trip cost you $3.89 a gallon. If you get 15 miles a gallon, guess what??? You just spent $7.78 for fuel + your time,+ your safety. Shopping on line is a craze right now. Why do you think all these stores have a web site?

Something does not sound right. SpeeDee should be around $6 + a $10 pickup charge if you don’t have a nearby drop off location.

Their oversize charges apply to packages with length & girth greater than 130 inches. I’ve shipped rods up to 9’8” and have never paid an additional fee.

Something wrong with your speedee carrier. I ship my 9'6" rods through them. From Chicago to MN, insured $400 it costs me less than $7. Problem for me is I have to travel to get there to ship it.
