Just curious... I am on the fence about making pre-tied bucktail skirts on coils. They woudl be the same length as most double 10s. I woudl make them in 6 packs of 9 different color selections. My price point woudl be about 50% less than current packs sold in retail shops at $9.99/6pk. Just seeing how much interest you guys would have on this. Width on the skrits woudl be about 1mm. This seems to give saltwater mylar a good rigid form and very similar to Hedron brand Flashabou. Just toying around with making 4000-5000 units. Thanks in advance for any input.

That's a HELL of a deal!!! Would it be all solid colors or mixed?

They woudl be mixed colors tied on a coil but when I say mixed I mean like pearl/white/silver all mixed and tied on one coil. Then my black is actually a black mixed with a rainbow black mylar, gold is a gold/yellow/orange and the list goes on. I usually don't do just a solid silver or white skirt. Fish are subtle color mixes so I try to make my bucktails and spinnerbaits with light color variances in the skirts too.

Good deal indeed. I went to a musky shop about 3 years ago to pick some up and I think Thorne had them in 3-packs for $7.99. They were Flashabou pre-tied so I know they were quality but still seemed a little pricey. I ended up buying a few hanks direct from Hedron. Got my new "Switch Blade" spinnerbaits coming out soon that come with 11 pre-tied skirts in different colors so you can mix and match your spinnerbait without buying 20 spinnerbaits... So that is why I figured to make extra skirts and package them up in 6 packs for guys who want to make their own. Thanks for the interest. I will probably make them.

James, after getting your rods wet for the first time this weekend I'd say if yoiu think it's a good idea...run Forrest Run! I'm betting you don't have too many bad ideas! Jake

Bad ideas!! LOL I have totes full of bad ideas! I bet I wasted about $20k last year just on molds of lures and new lip designs that did not work. Mike Gregg (retired musky lure painter) told me years ago to watch out what I wish for....I may get it
Glad you like the rod! Wait until you see my new single piece 9' rods about to come out. I can not wait!
Thanks,
James

As always another good idea, James.

Not exactly copper but I will have copper blades on one of the spinnerbaits.

The more I mess with the rods the more I like them. Can't wait until a set of jaws clamp down on a bait so I can feel that whole thing. When do we get the specifications on the new rod? Is the blank a multi taper?

The new solid 9' rods will be $110 until June 1 when I have them ready.
As for the rod specs, they will use the same blank taht I have designed for my current rods, just the blank is longer and the full blank is solid of course. I will ahve the 9' rods in MH (1-6oz lures), XH (3-12oz lures) and XXH (up to 36oz lures) in both split grip and full grip handles.

I also just started making some trolling rod prototypes so you can expect to see some glass rods comig out in fall 2011 if all goes well with testing.

I think it would be a great idea. Possibly offer custom colors for for a little higher price. I have tried to tie these things myself, and will only use those when fishing alone.

James, you know those bad ideas don't count! They are just stones in the path to great ideas! Ha Ha
Your pre tied skirts are a good idea & now I'm choppin' to get my hands on your new rods. I will also be wanting one of the glass trollers once you have the dynamics of that one mastered. I bet you aren't finding anything out there to get information from for what you want to make. Not an easy project for sure. The temptation is to not worry much about the weight. But that has killed many a good glass blank rod. I still love my glass rods for early season work. So look forward to them.

I would be interested in the skirts as well.
Have you thought about blades too?

Blades are a good topic. I have trouble finding the lighter weight ones. Everything out there seems to be hvy SS. They have a place but there's nothing like those easy starting big old blades like we used to have. I have several light weight bucktails that have oversized thin blades. The blades need re-shaping every time you catch a fish. I too complained about that until I realized how many fish were chasing these down!!

The blades I may be making in both #10 and #13 will be 032 thick. not sure on these yet. If sales would be good enough I woudl also punch our 024 and 040 blades too.

I like the skirt idea! Will we be able to mix and match the colors we want for the 6 pack or will just they come in pre-selected color combo packs?

Right now I will just have the 6 color pack all 6 colors the same but I am sure if you email me I can open a few for you to match them up and just sell the rest on eBay or something. Not really doing it to make much money, just a side gig to waste my wife's time for shipping

Better stick to copying baits that already work.
