Just a quick update for you folks who love to fish Buckhorn as much as I do. I was there this weekend (Sept 20, 21, 2003). Saturday was a great day. I boated 2 skies. 33/1/2 inch and 47 inches. I had 2 other follows in the mid to high 40's inches. The bass were also biting aggressively. All fish caught using bucktails on the weed flats in 6-8 feet of water near the channel (west shoreline). Sunday was much slower since the water was dead clam. I was able to get one large muskie to follow my lure back to the boat.

Thanks for the report! I'm seriously considering the MuskieFIRST outting next year on the Kawarthas, and this is about the time that the outting is scheduled for. Just a quick question though, what are water temps right now, and what is the water clarity generally throughout the system?

The water temperature is currently 66-67 degrees Fahrenheit. Water clarity is very high in the Kawartha region. No problem seeing bottom in 10 feet of water (calm water of course). Perfect for those following critters. If you need a place to stay check out Scotsman Point Resort (http://www.scotsmanpoint.com/)and Ask for Andrea. Tell her Mark Bove sent you. Very nice resort for both the fisherman and family. All cottages come with a 14-foot aluminum. Motors need to be rented separately. There's a launch on her property if you're bringing your own boat.

Muskie Hunter, you should consider joining us next fall for the outing. It's going to be a great time and a great opportunity to share some info.

I'm usually there at least 2 or 3 times in the fall. Do you stay at Scotsman Point Resort? Do you have any exciting muskie catches from Upper Buckhorn.

My wife and I are staying at Scotsman's Point next weekend, we had a week up there in Sept. and are hoping the fish cooperate a little better Oct 18/19. We've always had luck on the weedline right outside the bay at Scotsman's, following it to Triangle island and in front of the Flat Islands. Were you fishing near Gannons Narrows? I've yet to have a muskie there but lots of guys rave about it. Any advice for late season fishing on Buckhorn? We're usually there right after labour day and things are bound to change with the cooling down.

I have never fished Gannons Narrows for muskie. There is a narrow channel that takes you towards Gannons. It starts where Buckhorn and Chemong meet. This area is known as muskie alley. I have seen a few big ones there. My favorite areas for muskie are Six Foot Bay, the weed line in front of Andreas, and the weed lines in around the sunken island where buckhorn narrows towards the locks and all around the Elizabeth islands. Six-foot bay is by far the most productive for me. Start at the weed edge near the channel and work your way in. I like to cast buck tails and believers. If the weather cooperates I may just make it up there one more time. Trolling from Scotsman Point towards the Elizabeth islands is also a good choice. Try to stay in 12-15 feet water. Don't forget to record any fish that is 42 inches or better. Andrea will send you a certificate signed by the Mayor of Peterborough making you a member of the Kawartha Muskies something or other. I forget exactly what it says. Best of luck.

Thanks for the info. Ya we troll that muskie alley and everyone else in the boat gets muskies there but me! It looks so good on the map and feels good trolling along, it has yet to produce for me personally. As you leave that channel area heading towards Gannons on your right is a deep bay with abandoned cottages on it at the bottom of Fox Island. Wanted to try casting that bay cause it looks like a good muskie spot. We have good luck right out in front of Scotsman's Point and also get them trolling between there and the Elizabeth(Flat) Islands. Speed trolling jakes has worked there in the 15' depths, as well as the Flat Islands. Had them both casting and trolling there. When you start at the weededge by 6' bay, how far in do you work it? We've worked it right to the reed bed off there and had a few. Problem is my wife hates casting so we'll probably do a fair bit of trolling to keep peace in the boat. Was talking toAndrea today and she says the fishing shut down a bit during those few hot days we had last week but has picked up again as temps have dropped.

I don't believe it! It's Kitch Hill isn't it? I just realized who you were. It's Mark Bove here. We've sent each other emails quite often in the past. Every time I'm at Scotsman Point Andrea tells me that I just missed you. Either you had just left that day or a few day back. I think we may have missed each other again a few weeks back. I was there the weekend of the muskie derby (Oct 4) as well as the weekend of Sept 20th. And here I am talking to you as if you were new to Scotsman Point. One of these days we'll have to meet up. The water temperature was 52F the weekend of Oct 4th. This cooler and stable weather should get them back on the feed. Best of luck this weekend. Let us know how you did.

Hi Mark, didn't know it was you either. Ya we were up Sept. 6-13, and were going back Oct. 4/5 but my wife had knee surgery so we postponed till this weekend. We had pretty good luck the first 4 days but it shut down after that. Biggest was only 39" but it was a muskie at any rate. Hoping to break 40" this weekend, but weather looks awful for Sat. so we shall have to see. I'll fish in the rain but my wife won't and we are taking the kids (3 & 1 ) so it we shall have to do some worm drowning to keep them interested. They sit still for trolling pretty much, and after they get bored I drop them all off and go out myself. Water was 69* when we were up so I hoped the cooling off will improve the bite. $9 bass was the colour of choice for us that week, though other guys we spoke to had their best luck on firetiger spinners. People rave about Gannons Narrows area so we will try it again but it has yet to produce for us. Maybe this time. One more day working and then it's muskie fishing! Will keep you posted on our hopeful results.

Fished pigeon lake back in the 70's and early 80's.Than tried lower buckhorn for a few years, stoney lake for about 6 years, moon river, lake nip and the french river.Heading to upper buckhorn this september. Will be fishing for muskie and walleye. All muskie are released. In thirty plus years of muskie fishing our crew has never kept a single fish.Only enough walleye are kept for a meal on the day we catch them, all others are put back.Any suggestions on where to fish would be appriciated.Thanks.
