| I have never tried jigging with reaper tails, but I bought a few on sale the other day. What type of jigheads should I use (weight-color-hook size-etc.)? How do you rig them, hook exposed or weedless? What are your favorite color tails to use? How about the retrieve, slow jigging or swimming? As you can see I don't have a clue about how to use 'em, but haveta keep trying different stuff. |

| Best jig on the market, with the fastest penetrating hooks, is the Esox Cobra jig, designed by Steve Herbeck and Joe Puccio.

| I usually use large flippin jigs (1/2 to 3/4 oz.) and rig them with the hook exposed. When I feel it grab onto a weed, I rip it out fast and hard. This triggers a lot of strikes. Let the fish tell you how to work the jig. Start with a medium speed swimming action and if you don't get any takers slow down until you do. Sometimes you have to let it occasionally rest on bottom. They will pick it up off the bottom or just as you begin the retrieve again. The hit is often very light, like a bass picking up a plastic worm, so you have to pay close attention to what is happening on the other end of the line. Superbraids really help transmit the slightest hits. If you feel anything, set the hook. It won't cost you anything.
Good luck.
Keep your hooks sharp. |
