I'm new to the Muskie word, I need to get a do all reel, for a 8' pole.
Plan on running 10&13" doubles and some large rubber, pounders and possibly trolling them. I have a Alphamar 16 and a Fatham 20 on poles for flathead and blue cats, possibly adequate for the job, but would like to get something more suited for the job.

I like my saltist 20. The reel is about the same size as a 6500, maybe a little smaller.

In my opinion a decent all around for your application is a Calcutta 400B. Just a thought. I too have a Saltist 35BG that I use and love it. Big reel but a tank that handles everything from burning 8's to pounders. It is on a 9' TI XXH and a great set up. I know, more information than you wanted but I am bored. Soft water can't come quick enough.

for cheap, a Shimano Cardiff for $109.. for a better reel the Shimano calcutta 400b is great for $229.

I think you should provide a budget. Any reel that can handle 10s and 13s will most likely be just fine for the rubber. So the question comes down to what you want out of the bucktails. Things to consider:

Angler Fatigue - How easy to retrieve bait over course of day, do not underestimate this one
Speed of Retrieves desired - Do you want to burn or not? If yes, you want 36" per crank or more
Reel Durability - How well does it take abuse? (more important the more you fish)
Ease of Warranty / Repair work - With big blades it is a matter of when, not if the reel will have problems.

This is my general opinion, but reels under $200 will offer you some of the above, but not all. Once you get above $350 you'll start seeing all the qualities above at significant levels. Opinions will vary on this topic greatly which is why I say give a budget.

A used but recently serviced calcutta 400 te went for 175 on here. It had some significant cosmetic wear. I have two of them, they are really really good reels. The "d" replaced the "te" line and I personally am not a fan of the "d". I'm sure the d is a great reel but personal preference keeps me away from it. If I had to have just one reel, it would be between revo toro nacl 5.4 or calcutta te.
